well lads i need a bit of help with getting a car and what to look out for when im looking at it. i have 1000 max to spend but less would be better , it will only be used until i upgrade to a better car when i have more money. im 24yr female have drove a colt but want something different now. the only cars i will not drive is a mirca and a cinquecento both are just way small.

have my eye on 206s , corollas , polos or golf but if ye have any other suggestions i will be happy to hear . i want a car under 1.4 and fairly easy on fuel so maybe the golf might be better to leave. i cant tell what sort of driven il be doing per week but as of now il be doin less then 100km , but in a few weeks it will prob be 600 700km per week but that will only be fr a few weeks. oh and a car that's easy to maintain. thank u :D

opps sorry have thread it in the wrong place

I'd get a starlet. Not any more modern than your colt, but a lot nippier and better to drive.

Out of that list a late 90's Corolla will be your best bet. they are economical and about the most reliable car you are ever likely to own should you buy one. :)

Saloons less popular with youngfellas so more likely to find a goodun but also less desirable (not that the hatches are anyone's dream car either but you know what I mean)

That's what I was thinking. You'd get a nice Gi for that and for a bit more you'd get a GT Turbo.

I somehow doubt if a GT Turbo is something the OP is after...

    Why not?
Nicer than a Colt, 1.3 and a Toyota?

At 24, full licence? Might not be too bad.
The Gi has plenty of go in it anyway, no turbo in that.

OP is looking for a cheap run about.

Both of your suggestions will have had hard lives, when compared to the non-sport models of the same cars. They're typically more expensive, both to buy and insure. Being 24 doesn't change that.

OP, I always liked fiestas, if you can find a 1.25 ghia spec you'd be sorted. Great engines, you just have to watch out for rust on them, as they're getting old at this stage.

Fair enough or the Turbo but the Gi is handy enough to insure and not a lot to go wrong.
They come with a nicer interior and more extras over the standard cars too.

I know which one I'd rather spend a year in.

Even gi will have had a hard life, and as its old and jap import, insurance is def more

thanks for all the info , i have found a car, looks decent enough has nct till next year and its only about a hour away from me to look at it, insurance only 388euro for the year too. http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/5064414 any thoughts ? thanks

Sorry to bump the thread, I am also looking for a car to buy with a similar budget to the OP with maybe a bit more, nothing more than 1500 though. I would just like to know what people would normally pay for a 2000 or 2001 VW polo in perfect working order. Thanks

My driving instructor had a Corsa, it almost put me off driving.

Big exhaust and vinyl on bonnet point towards some sort of idiot owning it at some point.
