'03 Passat TDI 110, clutch 'popped' last night under low speed gear change, pedal went slack and to the floor. It isnt stuck to the floor but is swinging freely and loosely with no engagement (bit like my last gf ;) )

Any thoughts on diagnosis from the symptoms? Cable? Mountings or pedal box? There was no forewarning clutch slippage or loss of drive. I could do without it being a serious clutch/cylinder issue....

If the clutch pedal is swinging freely then its go to be a problem around the connection between the pedal and the master cylinder/plunger.
