Ford Focus sounds like a tractor!

I have a '05 Ford Focus tdci, and lately on longer journeys, the car starts getting very "throaty" for want of a better word. Basically the engine doesnt sound right when it's ticking over. The strange thing is that i could leave the car overnight, start it the next morning and it will sound the same for a few seconds and then seemingly clears itself and sounds normal again. The car drives fine, so I'm just wondering if anyone has any idea. I plan on taking it to the local mechanic next week but wondering if anyone has had any similar experience?

Check the plastic cover over the engine block. If this isn't put back on properly after a service it can vibrate like mad against the block which can make it sound like a bag of spanners.
