Draws for Munster Senior and Junior Schools Cups will probably be made tonight at the Munster Schools AGM like in the past few seasons but starting this thread now to gauge reaction to the new rules being put in place for next seasons Munster Schools Cups.
The first story is on the decision which is being made at the Munster schools AGM tonight and you can read that here while here is an article from the irish examiner from a few weeks ago where representatives from Castletroy College and St Munchins College argued for and against the motion and here is an article from December where representatives from St Munchins and Rockwell argued their cases on the ruling

Munster Schools extended squad from a few weeks back

From reports the AGM has decided that the controversial(for some) ruling on player eligibility for the schools cup will be in place from the 2014 senior cup . The MSC have voted on player eligibility rule.
3 players from each school will be exempt while a max of 2 will go through an appeal process. to go through an appeals process means they have to explain their circumstances to a committee.

Any players standout from that squad ormond?

Rory Moloney and Oisin Heffernan will both play for Connact u20's next year instead of Leinster u20's. Looks like a fight between Leinster and Connact for the cup. Still think Leinster have the most talented squad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 687 ✭✭✭lurtz

knew moloney got a contract but didnt know about heffernan, makes sense though seeing as hes from there.
Although could be a backlog of props there with himself Walshe and Meunargia.
Also connachts training is reverting to 3 days a week whereas leinsters is still 5,that could be a deciding factor as to who will come out on top

    St. Gerrard's has:

1 player involved with the Leinster u19 development squad(David Baker - scrumhalf)
4 players involved with the Leinster u18 development squad(Jack Ryan - hooker, Charlie Kenny - lock, Con Callan - centre, Tommy Whittle - outhalf)
3 players involved with the Leinster u17 development squad(Billy O’Reilly - backrow, Tom Foley - scrumhalf, Ben Kealy - fullback)

Heffernan will be in Leinster Camp with under 20's in 2 weeks time!

Yeah Heffo sticking with Leinster and skipping u19 level along with a few of the other super talented under-18s who just finished school.

CBC Monkstown have three players with the u17 squad team this summer:

William Fay - backrow, Alex Holmes - hooker, Robert Jordan - scrumhalf.

Ben Mahon - scrumhalf is with the u18 squad.

Leinster Senior League fixtures have been made.
Havent seen all fixtures but 1 of the groups is
Kings Hospital, Castleknock, CUS, Kilkenny, Wesley and Gonzaga

You're right, Oisin Heffernan is staying with Leinster u20's. I think the Leinster 18's and 20's are much stronger than the other 3 provinces. Only pity for Leinster is that Dan Leavy and Harrison Brewer won't be involved.

    Why no Brewer?

Assume Leavy won't be involved because he is ahead of this level, hopefully involved with Ireland during the 6N though.

Also it's pretty hard to know how good the 18s will be, most of the players are unproven. They did perform better though against the lambs so it's a safe assumption.

If Dan Leavy isn't involved does that mean Peter Dooley won't be involved?

Heard a story that Brewer wasn't selected for the academy because he just had a hip operation and wont be playing for most of this (calender) year. Any truth in it?

Just done the J Cert and gone to Sunderland..unfortunately for CBC and Leinster schools..although U17..have no doubt would have been good enough for the U18s schools..not many that talented at his age group!

great shame, likelihood of him making it professionally at sunderland is minuscule. Good luck to the kid though, even at such a young age you could see the undoubted talent. His try against Michaels was wonderful.

Brewer had surgery a few weeks ago. And won't be fit for a few months. So he'll moss most, if not all of the Leinster under 20 games. Leavy will train with the Senior Leinster side over the Summer. Does anyone have a final Leinster and Connact squads for Under 20 level ?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 392 ✭✭JagerScout

Nope those squads probably won't ever be officially announced.

Most of the provinces do not announce their squads until September right before the interpro's begin. Munster are normally the only province who name squads for underage interpro's early in summer.
Connacht have quite a few players who've played their rugby in other provinces like Rory Parata(Connacht 19s last sept apart), Jack Feeney, Darren Coady

Why is that? would be nice to know all the provincial squads for U20, it would give insight into Sub Academies etc and who they are planning to use. Connacht will always get more from other provinces, especially Leinster due to their large numbers at 18's and 19's. They might get more going in at 20's this year if Leinster only have one team at 19's.

Looking back at the 2011 Ireland u-18 schools side that won the FIRA competition that year.

13 Players that went onto to represent Ireland u-20:

    Luke McGrath(Scrumhalf, Leinster)
    David Shanahan(Scrumhalf, Leinster)
    Bryan Byrne(Hooker, Leinster)
    Edward Byrne(Prop, Leinster)
    Gavin Thornbury(Lock, Leinster)
    Dan Leavy(Backrow, Leinster)
    Ryan Murphy(Backrow, Munster)
    Rory Scannell(Centre, Munster)
    Robert Henshaw(Fullback, Connacht)
    Christopher Taylor(Prop, Ulster)
    Stuart Olding(Centre, Ulster)
    Rory Scholes(Back 3, Ulster)
    Chris Farrell(Centre, Ulster)

Of these 13 players, the only players not confirmed to have joined an academy setup are Chris Taylor and Dave Shanahan, although both are heavily rumored to be joining Ulster's academy.

Four players are still eligible for the u20's next season:
    Dan Leavy(Backrow, Leinster)
    Jack O'Neill(Backrow, Leinster)
    Ben Alexander(Backrow, Ulster)
    Mark Best(Centre, Ulster)

    The rest of the squad:
    Mark Best(Centre, Ulster)
    Thomas Ferrari(Prop, Connacht)
    Cian O'Halloran(Wing, Munster)
    Gordon Frayne(Prop, Leinster)
    Andrew Murphy(Hooker, Leinster)
    Luke Satchwell(Backrow, Leinster)
    Jerry Sexton(Lock, Leinster)
    Donagh Lawler(Lock, Leinster)
    Conor McEllin(Wing, Leinster)
    Jack Fitzpatrick(Fullback, Leinster)

What u19 (13/14) players do people think have a chance at playing u20 rugby next season? I have to say, I didn't expect either Timmins or O'Donoghue to feature in the JWC.

    My thoughts

Rory Moloney, a scrum-half, Sean O'Hagan and the most obvious - Billy Dardis.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 392 ✭✭JagerScout

    Agreed on Moloney and Dardis.

A scrum-half too not sure who but I guess Jack Cullen has to be favoured as he is the only eligible scrumhalf in the academy system, not a lot of talent available there. Perhaps Josh Fullerton or Nick McCarthy?

O'Hagan is an interesting call, surely talented but in a position of relative depth.

Think we would see Brewer but injury might curtail that.

Kieran Treadwell is a player I could see being involved

Surely you mean Ross Molony the Michael's second row not Rory Moloney the Roscrea flanker?

Ross will certainly be involved but Rory could easily be involved aswell.

I think we will see both.

Another player I could see being involved is Josh Owens from Ulster.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,257 ✭✭✭Hagz

Do you mean the winger Jack Owens? I'm not sure. I'm expecting Adam Byrne and Alex Wootton to be the wingers with Ian Fitzpatrick and Sean Coughlan competing hard as well. After watching Sean Coughlan in the LSSC, he looked like a good wing prospect.

    **** yeah, Jack Owens.

Was voted Ulster Schools player of the year for last season. Covers wing and fullback, very talented kid.

Yeah you could be right there, you forgot Ross Adair too he will be in contention aswell.

Did not know that. It's pretty hard to get info on Ulster's underage players. They don't even update their academy on their website...

They haven't announced their new academy members yet so no need to update yet. Expect Donnan and Taylor to join it at least.

Their standouts for the u20 team this year will be from what I know:
    Ross Kane(Prop), Russell Blair(Lock), Ben Alexander(Backrow), Mark Best(Centre) and Ross Adair(Wing).

Assume players like Fullerton and Owens will skip u19 level as they usually do in Ulster.

On academy, underage squads in Ulster and lack of info. Fairly sure different rules to republic on underage players up north. could be wrong but fairly sure I read that somewhere

it's not uncommon for guys still in school to play for the 20s in Ulster.

although it rules him out of the Ireland team.

Best was u20 this season but he is eligible for next season too.

Alex Thompson and Thomas Donnan(John's brother) are both interesting prospects at lock for Ulster.

Russell Blair is another who is u20 this season, who i've heard a lot about.. rumored to be joining the Ulster academy.

Front row will be very tight across the board. Too hard to predict at the minute. A lot of quality along with players with great potential. Would expect Kelleher to start on the wing, and Hayden isn't good enough for this level, so expect to see someone else wearing the 6 jersey. Out-Half will be very tight, but McKeon should start. Still too early to predict the starting 15.
