    A twelve-year-old automatic diesel Passat?? Shave your head with a cheesgrater - you'll have about the same experience, and it'll be a lot cheaper.

    I had an 05 Tiptronic one, 130bhp, and I loved it. Did 25k in it in 6 months and didn't miss a beat - it's why I prefer auto's, now.

    With the 130bhp engine it returned about 38mpg, so not as light as a manual.

    Had a 02 auto for a few years myself. Never gave me any issues in that regard.

    Plenty of others though but I learned my lesson there. Don't buy when things don't seem quite right..
