Hi folks. Looking for my first DSLR for all reasons investigated and have narrowed it down to one of two

    Either the

Nikon D3100 or Canon 1100D both with 18-55 lens

I wanted the opinion of use fom you the photographers. Which would you go for or would you hold off and pay more for the model up.

I know your question is what's its use. It's use is home photography. Portrait 10x8. Kids football holidays and the option to expand if I enjoy it

Without being facetious go with whatever feels best in your hand. They are both perfectly good systems to get into.

Ok so. That's a fair enough point. Thanks

I got the 1100D (my first dslr) back in April and I absolutely love it to bits.

That said, they're both basically as good as each other. do you have any friends who have Nikon or Canon? If so I'd buy the same brand, you might be able to swap kit or lend some kit off them :)

I love the way most photographers aren't too fanboyish about their kit.

My first DSLR was a Canon because I knew two people with Canons, so I could swap lenses with them. I thought that was a pretty good reason to go with Canon.

Between the two cameras you mentioned, I believe the Nikon has the edge in terms of image quality.

Bit of a curve ball here, but if video isn't important to you, you could hop straight up on a second-hand Canon 40d/50d for the more "pro" build and features.

Stealth Ninja black with a hint of gold comes only with Nikon, bear that in mind :-)

But as an add on, I have to state, usually what photographers do is upgrade to a better version of the same brand. Rarely do you get folk changing brand (though it has happened).

This being the case, Canons way of handling EC and FEC is better than Nikon. With Canon they are independent, with Nikon they are not. TTL Flash is slightly different with Canon. Canon lenses I find a tad more expensive than the Nikons. Nikon have a standalone RAW editor called Capture NX2. This software is made especially for Nikon .NEF files and it is excellent. Canon do not have anything like this.

I went Nikon becuase I prefer black. I just don't like the silly looking colour of the Canon lenses.

Great. I am going to go cannon so. My short term plans is to get a good editing software as well.

Is the free stuff like gimp suitable for armatures or should I buy one that will last.

    Opinions appreciated.

Gimp is a good alternative to Photoshop but if you are looking for some good software to go with your camera I would strongly recommend lightroom. You can get a 30 day free trial from Adobe to try it out. I use lightroom more that I would photoshop.

That's probably the most important factor when choosing a camera alright.

Great. I am going to go cannon so.
What's your budget, and where are you based?

Having looked at a few of the local shops, some give you a memory stick and a camera bag, some don't.

    connscameras.ie €450
    berminghamcameras.ie €439
free 1/2 day training course, free 8GB memory card and camera bag
    =
    hallcameras.ie €429
    Incl Lens & Card
    =
    harveynorman.ie €400
    nothing?

A quick search on Amazon brings up £300 which would be about €354 before shipping, etc.

There are some benefits of buying local (somewhere to goto if the camera breaks, etc), but some buy online as it's cheaper. It's something that you'd have to weigh up. The above is something to keep in mind if you want to haggle for a better deal if in the shops.

The EOS1100D is €379 in Harvey Norman currently including a half day photography course, does that sound like a decent deal?

And the camera itself is suitable for a first time DLSR buyer?

I ended up getting the cannon 1100d it came with 2 lens as well as the standard lens it came with a 75 300. I got the pack for 499 in pc world.

To be honest I thought the help I got in the camera shop blanch was the best but money talks.

I am big into portrait shots I think so I am looking to buy a 50mm lens. So that will be my next research as there is so many variants.

I am also going to go with gimp and if I like it I will pay for the version. It seems enough for an armature like me.

Sincere thanks for all your help. Regards,
