What is the average size of both the big ring and small ring? With my 12-26 cassette and chainrings of 52/39 is it no wonder that I find steep climbs a bit on the tough side? What would the best combo be? Cheers.

    There isn't really an average.
53/39 is the most common on regular doubles.
    Then 50/34 for compact chainrings.

You are almost certainly limited by the BCD of your crankset. You can go down to 38T with a new chainring at the front and up to a 28T on the back. It won't make a great deal of difference.

Get faster or get a compact chainset.
