when to change tyres?

    Hi all,
Was looking for a bit of advice about my tyres.
I'm cycling my boardman team carbon 2010 for 3 years now.
I haven't been getting any punctures and usually only start cycling during the summer months and maybe do a sportive or two.
I use it a little during the rest of the year but not much.
    I prob do 1000kms a year.
I was wondering should I be thinking about changing tyres anytime soon they look fine and I'm not getting punctures yet.
Is there a shelf life after which its time to change them?
Or do most people just wait til they start getting frequent punctures to change them?
    Many thanks

Frequent punctures or the casing cords showing through the rubber.

That said, mine usually get catastrophically murdered by nails in planks before they wear out...
