I was tasked with sourcing a bass for a mates birthday. He's a beginner/hobbyist Budget approx €150. Was looking around adverts and SX was something that jumped out. So i read the reviews and they are certainly more awesome than poor from what i read...any experience?

When i look at it through my teenage self eyes, i think if i got one for a present i would be thrilled!

they retail at €130 ish (€90ish on adverts) with starter packs in waltons going for 170 ish....They are so cheap i'd probably get a new one.

In the price range you quoted you basically get what you pay for. Having said that, the SX's are not bad for the price. My first bass was an SX and it served me well for a year or so until I upgraded. Bear in mind that it may need a set up to your friends personal requirements, in order to make it comfortable to play. Unless your friend can do this himself, it would be few extra euro onto the cost price. If you were to buy on adverts, the seller might be prepared to do this.

Though I have no experience of them, the Fender Squiers are reputed to be good value.

Unless it is a surprise present, it would be best for your friend to try out some basses for himself. Some have wider necks than others, so what would be comfortable for one person, may not be so for another. It is always best to try before you buy, when ever possible.

That's exactly it, trying to get the best of the cheap...I have heard the SX's are better than squiers?
The reviews seem to all agree that a setup is required.

That's generally the case, thought you could be lucky and get a bass that does not require one.

Nothing wrong with SX by all accounts. Squire are good as well. Most basses are set up pretty o.k. as the tolerances are a bit bigger with regards to action height. If he finds it needs a setup, it won't cost the earth a few weeks down the line. A new instrument is always a nice present.
