It is great to see people trying there best to achieve their personal goals whether it be fitness, weight loss or muscles gain etc.

What annoys me is people that chat on their phones while in the gym. You cant be giving your best while talking on a mobile. I dont care what anyone says, phones dont belong in the gym.

What scares me in my gym, is the amount of people using free weights with such bad form. People with egos that want to lift heavy for the sake of telling someone how much they can lift, ignoring the possibility of serious injury.

There's a chap where I train who was overweight this time last year and about 24% BF. He's now a good optimal weight for his height and is easily maintaining 8% BF. He trains cardio at 8am and is back to weights in the evening.

    Unreal transformation.

Good form is for punk asses, who sit on the couch talking **** and eating bon bons. CT fletcher says so!

hard work is the key to it all, i agree about the mobiles, but each to there own. i work out hard and regardless of wieght or fitness level it's great to spot the hard workers from the show off

mobile for me has become and very useful aid as i log everything on it and another big plus is that if holds most of my music collection.

Yeah it’s great to see people working out hard and sensibly but its unfortunately more common to either see people working out hard doing the same cardio routines and getting nowhere \ groups there for a chat taking up space \ people lugging around weights only doing damage to themselves.

I guess that’s why if your serious about training its worth spending the extra few euros if you can to join a good strength and conditioning gym. There you will see people always busting their ass working out.

The only thing worse than people using mobiles are the people who need to take up space on a bench or machine to chat with their mates or on the phone. My gym doesn't seem to have that problem though, thankfully.

People hogging a bench just to sit on while resting between sets are the worst of the worst!

I went the other day and on my way to the weights I saw a chubby guy on the treadmill going no more than walking pace. He had a mild sweat going, but didnt look like he was putting in the effort
I thought "pff, wasting his time there"

I did my workout, and almost 2hrs later walked past him again. Dripping in sweat. bright red in the face. going slightly faster than when I first saw him, needless to say I felt humbled after. Mustve been some huge effort to keep that going for so long, even at a slow pace.
He truly looked like he had pushed himself beyond the max. Easily the most exhausted person I saw that day. I was amazed he still seemed to be going.
Hope he gets the results he is working towards.

I think fair play for getting up the courage and getting out there to work it off ! That must take some guts.

I hope that chap you're talking about sticks with it and reaches his goal:)

I was in the Phoenix Park last Saturday with my fiance doing an outdoor session - hill sprints, interval work, lots of pretty tough going stuff. A bunch of lads had been playing rugby about a hundred yards away from us and had finished up their game when one of them decides to jog over with the ball with his top off and proceeded to do (or attempt) one-armed push-ups, regular pushups, crunches and some other exercises right beside us as we were taking a rest period, all the while cheered on by his friends, laughing their heads off. Now we're not the fittest, most glamorous couple and I'm quite sure that the two of us look quite the pair as we're struggling up the Papal cross hill for our umpteenth time, me all wobbly thighs and red cheeks, him with his Star Wars TIE fighter t-shirt and sweaty baldy head, but fcuk you rugby assh*le for being such a d-bag. It's a Saturday evening, we're in the Park working as hard as we can, we really don't need you trying to show us up or make us feel bad. We might not be in as good shape as you are, but we're trying. Pity you can't condition your personality into something better.

Hopefully he's a minority and the majority shares the OP's sentiments. Whatever about going into a gym where everyone is working towards similar goals, I'm pretty damn proud of my fiance for having the guts (which he's trying to get rid of :pac:) to work himself so hard in front of tourists and people out for an afternoon stroll. Fcuk the begrudgers who want to make fun of us.

    Anyway, rant over :o

If it happens again your fiance should go over & start coming onto him! It'll end in 1 of 2 ways! Could be hilarious for you & your fiance...or not! It really depends on what you're into! Life is all about risks :D

    Ha, what an ass Jerrica!

I was running last night - something which I just hate and cannot do very well - but fcuk it, I had just done 75 front squats in 4 minutes prior to that so I was pretty happy to have made it back from the end of the promenade at all.

Huffing and puffing, I pass a family out strolling, and the Dad goes "mmmmmmm Ice Cream" little sh*t :pac:

I laughed (well I tried, in between chest pains) but then thought, feck it - nice example you're setting for your kids there dude!

@Jerrica. I'd rather have wobbly thighs and red cheeks than yer man's personality.

I'm lucky in that I am surrounded by some pretty awesome people, who regardless of their actual fitness level, train to their max. I think its more motivational to see someone overcome real limitations and do their personal best, than to see someone who is fit as feck and makes it look easy. :)

There is an old dude who runs past where I work a couple of days a week. Must be mid seventies. He runs in a kind of shuffle, which at first glance looks slow. But if you actually check out his pace, he is fairly rocking on. He wears variety of marathon teeshirts so he has done the hard days. I think he's brilliant.

I was in the gym today and there was a 50/60 man there working out. Ignoring his dodgey black hair dye and tan, he was very henched. Had a great v-taper going on and was really lean with a fitness model/crossfitter look.

I'm not entirely convinced yer man actually meant it to make fun of you and your fiance at all... sports teams are a 'dynamic' all of their own, they're f*ckin weird in alot of ways! Male testosterone, macho bullsh*t and home-erotic behaviour all over the place... it's possible this was some weird bet or forfeit amongst the rugger 'goys' (for being the worst player in training that night for example - in an old GAA team of mine, we used to make the worst performer from the week before wear a training bib that simply said 'I Am a Geek' - see, weird!! :D )... and not meant to make fun of you at all...

Still, must have been a strange experience and, most importantly of all, you two keep up the hard work!

not a good idea to over do it in the gym if fat will only lead to arteries getting inflamed after you leave the gym followed by heart attack.

My point being that the attitude of others put a lot of larger or unfit people off going to the gym, fair play to the chap not to give a **** what others think.

Whenever I see an overweight person in the gym I always hope they stick with it. Unfortunately nearly all of them last less than a month. I can fully understand though as I find it very hard to motivate myself to go a lot of days. Funny thing is the gym is the easy part when trying to lose weight, diet is a bastard.

I swim regularly and about 6 months ago met an older man in the pool who had swam 1 length and was coughing water, wheezing, spluttering, red faced and generally wrecked from it. He said to me "Will I ever get fit? I had heart surgery and now Ive to get fit, I feel like itll never happen". He struggled through 3 more lengths, coughing, spitting, out of air etc and then left. I talked to him before he went and reminded him that technique is a big part of it, Rome wasnt built in a day, do 4 lengths today, 6 next week, 8 the week after etc.... itll come.

I saw him last week. He got in and swam at least 20 lengths continuously, and then had a short break and off he went again, no wheezing, no coughing, so struggle. Great to see.
