New car time - Golf TDI: what to look out for?

So it's new car time for me :)

Not a major petrol head but have my heart set on a Golf diesel: want something fun to drive and I will be doing 500-600 km per week for rest of the year. I learnt to drive on my Dad's old Mk1 back in 1990!

I've a budget of up to €14K, which I guesss hould get me a good early Mk6 model. Looking on carzone there are a few around but the bigger well know dealerships seem to have added a €1.5K premium. Seems to me like that'd buy a lot of non-warranty care or am I being naive? I don't have a trade in - is that factored into the list price?

Would really appreciate any advice/warnings/things to look out for comments, TDI vs HDI etc.

    Thanks,

    Aykina

Thinking of between whenever in 2008 the new model arrived and 2010.

Randomly picked 60,000 miles as mileage cut off - but that's probably because I used to drive Alfas and that was when things like timing belts started to get dicey!

Most of the mk6 golfs would be 1.6tdi. We have that in our octavia and although its adequate power wise I wouldn't call it "fun" To drive. You might be better of considering a 2l tdi.

Thanks, see I wouldn't have figured that!
They really are kind of pricey, Octavia/Leon really are better value for pretty much same thing.

I'm not saying the 1.6tdi is slow but if you want something with abit of power the 2l tdi. Now if you want something really fun you could look at a octavia vrs 170 2l tdi. I don't know if you can get the golf with that engine or not.

Ha - I just googled that! might be too much fun for me ;-) My last car was an old 2l auto Merc that just cruised along like a barge - so going back to manual will be quite the thrill! But it had a kick (Kompressor) too.

You've made me realise that a little more test driving is in order. Best be careful or it'll be back to the Alfas and a broken heart / wallet again!

    Ta.

Quick update (mainly for Bpmull): you were right; test drove 1.6tdi and yep it's not exactly inspiring in terms of excitement! That combined with crazy VW premium price (esp when compared to equivalent Skoda or Seat) made me rethink entire efficiency plan vs need for a little joy in my daily commute!

The life's too short feeling won out: and yet another Alfa somehow done gone happened! 2008 159 JTD. I'm justifying fuel efficiency / tax / vet bills against the €5K price delta :D

Quite sure she'll break my heart just like all her Alfa predecessors, but sure I'm delighted and (for now) happy like a kid every time I peek out the window at her!

    Vroom vroom ;)

Some of the 2.0 mk6s are low power versions (110?)
