My 3 year old gets into the bed with me most nights and I don't get a wink of sleep with him tossing and turning and kicking with me so I'd prefer him to stay in his own room. Only exception is when he's sick I prefer him in with me

Ours kipped in with us till they were 2. Then they moved to their own. Pros - no crying kids to get up to, slept like err babies.
Cons - none I can think of. Yet to meet a person with any memories of being 1 or 2 so the whole " it will make them clingy" thing is a bit null.

Secsy time involves sneaking out to another room when they're asleep. I always thought that was what God invented couches for anyway.

I think I had my own bedroom at maybe 2 but could still sleep in my parents bed from time to time til I was maybe 4ish

Kids should feel safe and secure and if that means they wander into their parents bed every night then it's not fair to stop them, they grow out of it eventually.

Surely allowing your kid to sleep with you will only serve to increase their sense of insecurity?

I grew up sharing very close quarters with my sister, and it took me a long time to be comfortable sleeping alone, because I literally never had a room to myself until my mid-teens. And that's just being in the same room as someone who I wasn't (emotionally) close to. I'd hate to think what a freak I would have ended up if I spent my childhood physically in the same bed as my parents.

I know it seems harmless when they're very little and very determined to sleep with you, but I think you'd not only be building up a mental connection whereby they need to be with you to sleep, you'd also be giving yourself unhealthy habits.
