    Anyone have any ideas?

Get ODIN and flash the generic UK rom for your model. All the files and instructions are on XDA, have a google.

Other option is to root it and then use Titanium backup to force remove them.

True story, I have no idea how to do any of this, but I'm fairly IT literate and should be able to figure it out if I find the right tools/roms.

    Is this the ODIN thingy?

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703998

Do I have to download the UK ROM or will ODIN find it for me? I'm guessing I should back all my conacts/texts/etc to my google account before doing this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,095 ✭✭✭✭ED E

    Yeah, thats ODIN.

You need to grab a firmware from XDA too, find out your exact model to be sure it matches as some phones have regional versions that arent intercompatible.

If you're flashing from jelly bean to jelly bean/ics to ics etc I *think* theres no need to wipe while doing it, but yeah, best bet is to do backups first either way for safety.

Seaneh I've flashed a custom rom on my wife's Galaxy Y and to be perfectly honest, it was a tricky little fcuk of a phone to do- even the rooting when one app would tell you it was rooted, another app would tell you it wasn't.

I'm posting from mobile at the moment, but do a search on XDA for a custom rom called "JELLYBLAST V3". The baseband you want is "XXLF3" (I'm posting this from mobile myself at the minute so I don't have the links to hand), but if you Google after that, there are plenty of easy to follow tutorials that'll show you how to put a custom rom on your phone.

Back up your contacts, messages and photos/music before you even go about rooting the phone. Your apps can be downloaded again from the Play store once you sign in using your Google account on the phone and will work as normal.

Download handcent sms or go sms for text messages as they still haven't fixed the 160 character limit in android before it converts to an mms, but other than that JELLYBLAST is fast, light and very good on the phone.

He just wants to clear some bloatware, I was suggesting a STOCK rom.

    S5360_XXKK6_OXXKK2_XXKK5
    European multilanguage build.
    based on: S5360XXKK6_S5360OXXKK2_RST_S5360XXKK5_HOME.tar.md5
    ro.build.date=Wed Nov 23 21:52:07 KST 2011
    ro.build.version.release=2.3.6
    Supported languages:
    XX = de,en,es,fr,hu,it,nl,pt(cs,da,el,fi,no,pl,sl,sv,tr )
    Included CSCs: (Default is XEU)
ATO AUT COS CPW CYO CYV EIR EUR FOP ITV MOO PAN PHE SUW TPH XEF XEH XEO XEU XEZ XSK
This build does not contains any provider specific bloatware.

Thats the very first one, and its bloatware free.

Instructions and FAQ are further down the page.

You're probably right to stick with stock alright until you've flashed a few times and get familiar with the variety of custom roms for the Galaxy Y (There's not nearly as many custom roms as there are for the likes of the Galaxy S2).

ICS though was never released for the Galaxy Y, never mind even jellybean, so the only way to get them is through custom roms. The thing to bear in mind though is that custom roms can be buggy whereas the stock rom will work perfectly.

I have CyanogenMod v9 (ICS) running on my Galaxy mini whereas my son still has gingerbread running on his Galaxy mini, simply because he prefers standard stock roms to custom roms.

Nemisis One rom looks good too but i'm not sure if it would be as stable as the stock from. Would be worth a try if your going down the custom route.

Think I'll stick to the stock gingerbread rom that ED E posted, I really just want to get rid of the bloatware that came with the phone so I don't get the stupid "low memory" notification quite as much.

So I download the stock rom, put phone in download mode, commect to pc and then click PDA on odin, pick the rom I want and away I go?

Er, I've followed all those steps but the ID:COM section doesn't "turn yellow" when I connect the phone, in fact, nothing happens...

That sounds to me like you don't have the Samsung USB Android drivers installed. Try these-

Before I go ahead, in the zip file there was a PDA, CSC and two MODEM files... I put pda to pda, csc tp csc, what do I do with the modem files? just ignore them?

The only options in ODIN are PDA, PHONE and CSC.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 18,300 ✭✭✭✭Seaneh

Put one of the MODEM files in the PHONE section on ODIN after some googling, here's hoping :P

Nuts! Here, it'll be easier to use these instructions and an OPS file (One package)

Had to do a factory restore.
plus side of things, the daft/cinema/boardsdeals/adverts apps all seem to be gone.

Bad side, my phone is no longer unlocked and my simcard doesn't work anymore...

    bollocks.

You can SIM unlock the phone again though yourself. Just download Galaxy Toolbox from the Google Play market.

Not sure your doing it right, I know on the Galaxy S3 you put the firmware (.tar or .zip, I cant recall) into PDA whilst the phone is in download mode....

If its not recognizing it at the moment try rebooting your pc....

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 18,300 ✭✭✭✭Seaneh

Never mind, rooted it fairly easily.

    Well, there were 4 files.

One with PDA one with CSC and two with MODEM

I put pda to pda, csc to csc and after some googling I thought I was meant to put one of the modem files to phone, i was wrong, feck it anyway, its working again now, I used a super user root and galaxy toolbox to unlock it, once the phone works and the bloatware is gone ill be happy.

Is your phone still booting up though?

Use this guide to root it-

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1822445

It's what I used. Superuser will tell you the phone isn't rooted when you're done, but it actually IS.

This is why I said from the beginning that it's a pain of a phone to work with. I rooted, debranded and SIM unlocked my wife's "Hello Kitty" Meteor Galaxy Y and I had an easier time of it putting custom roms on mine and my son's Galaxy minis and numerous Galaxy S2's.

EDIT: Glad you got it sorted Seaneh, you'd an easier run of it than I did! :D

Retried, left out the modem files, worked perfectly.

Right, lets see if the netowkr is recognised this time!
