Irish 'Faceism'

Going to get stick from some quarters for this post, (it is AH ) but nevermind what's the worst that could happen?

There is, to me anyway, a certain phenomenon among Irish people about prejudging people because of the way they look facially, someone who looks more quintessentially Irish than usual, let's call it for arguments sake 'the Wayne Rooney look' attracts a certain ire and disdain, as regards negative comments about being a 'knacker', etc, etc. The person in question may be a multi lingual graduate, but they're doomed and prejudged from the outset. This has always struck me as an indictment of the self-hating aspect in Irish people.

And there's another particular type of Irish look, let's call it 'the Ryan Tubridy or Brian O'Driscoll look', there's a certain clarity and symmetry to the features and the nose, jawbone and cheekbones are all distinct, the sort of face Fine Gael politicos like Lucinda Creighton have, this sort of face opens doors for you wherever you go in Ireland, there's some sort of subconscious deference to those who have it, it's deemed to be a 'middle class face' or less Celtic and more Anglo-Norman and indicative of some sort of higher intellect or social status.

What sort of face do you have, OP?

What sort of face do you have, OP?

It's the first type, ie; quintessentially 'Celtic Irish'

Is Ryan Tubridy symmetrical? I'm not sure he is.

What do you think? He looks like Wayne Rooney. Poor guy.

Opened the thread expecting something about extreme right wing groups in Ireland.

    Now I'm just extremely disappointed.

Face wise, I look somewhat Mediterranean (probably because I am) so an odd time I will here someone question if I can speak English. I can.

So basically you are saying poor people have a celtic look whilst normal and better off people look "anglo-norman"

Cant stand Ryan Tubridys face! What a waste of molecules!

Where does Joe Duffy fit into this theory?

It's all in the genes. Very little anybody can do apart from surgery and a healthy diet. From an evolutionary perspective a sign of good health and therefore more chance of increasing genealogy was facial symmetry so we are "built" to favour this.

Joe is a man of the people, the little man on the street, the oppressed majority. He defo has the celtic look

    And Craig Doyle?

    And Craig Doyle?

Craig Doyle is not a man of the people because of his constant harassment of the man on the street to purchase UPC materials

On scale of 1 to Adolf Hitler, Rooney is about a 9, I would say.

Is it a phenomenon? You need to steer clear of shallow judgemental backstards OP.

In terms of facial expression, it's often down to dentistry.

You'd be amazed the effect that braces can have on facial symmetry.

The Irish health service being what they are, braces and good dental care are unaffordable for a lot of low income earners. This can be 'written all over their face', so to speak.

As for other facial features, there is a stereotype in place that middle class young men wear their hair up to medium-long, while lower income young men shave their hair quite short.

But you must realize that Ireland is too small a gene pool, and too genetically cohesive for there to be any genetic difference between lower and middle income earners.

I agree with facial symmetry playing a role in sexual selection as good symmetry indicates good health and therefore better genetic chances but I don't put much truck into the so-called "Celtic" or "Anglo-Norman" or "foreign" face idea.

Every time I arrive at T2 in Dublin Airport and look at the faces of famous Irish people one thing I notice is how heterogenous they are - there is no stereotypical Irish "look" apart from maybe pale skin and freckles IMO. In my own family, my two sisters and myself look quite different (no, we are not all adopted:pac:) with different face and nose shapes.

IMO jaw and nose size extremes are the strongest determinants for whether a face is attractive, average or ugly. Facial ugliness is all about features being out of balance.

PS: BOD and Ryan Tubridy have very, very different face types. I think the OP is reading into something which is not really there.

PPS: There's hope for you yet OP - a gay porn star from Cuba called Eduardo has a face like Wayne's but that hasn't stopped his career "expanding" over the years...

Ever notice how there are different groups of people with similar facial people. You always see it, there are many types of it but there are people who are display similar facial features amongst society, then there are unique.

Its the same in every country, and I always wondered if there's a name to it.

Drico and Tubridy are neither similar looking or symmetrical

OP, you are so far off the mark with this theory, its not even funny. Success in life has absolutely nothing to do with opening doors with your face.
