See any problems with this build?

What's your budget, what do you want to use it for? Do you already have an OS?

gaming only, have win8, have monitor,
was gonna get this system and upgrade the graphics next year to the 7 series NVidia or pick up a cheap 680.

I would like the 660ti in this build but cant really afford it. budget is 700 max

this comes in around 650 I think

    I assume you have a 1080p monitor?

Is grab a Hyper 212 and an OCable mobo so that you can overclock that CPU.

Also, I'd grab a cheap 7870 for the same as that 660. The 7870 overclocked will beat that card.

monitor is sub standard at the mo, but thinking of picking up a Yamakasi when I can afford , can you recommend a brand of 7870?

I'd go with the ASRock Extreme 3 instead of the MSI, its a better board for overclocking, the extreme4 even better again if you can spare another tenner.

The FX-6300 stands up really well vs the FX8320 as a CPU purely for gaming so it is worth considering, especially as it would free up some extra funds to put towards the GPU, putting the 660Ti within budget. Although personally I would probably get a 7870 XT instead as I think it is better value but theres not a whole lot in it really.

taking it all on board, and crunching some numbers. thanks.

Definately would consider the 7870 XT from aria, really good performance and 4 games thrown in as well.

    7870 with FX6300 Combo?

    7870 with FX6300 Combo?

I think so, an OC'ed FX6300 and HD7870XT would make a nice combo on this sort of budget

much difference with the NON - XT model?

A bit. At 210 euro the price performance of the XT is excellent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 121 ✭✭martinburke

    ok

can the 660ti stand up to the XT?

    ok

can the 660ti stand up to the XT?

Overclocked (this is easy with a bit of guidance, btw, nothing from which to shy away), the XT edges outt he 660ti in performance, I would think they're essentially even though (others will have a more accurate answer though). But it's over 50 quid cheaper so the obvious buy :)

with the saving on the cpu I would be steering more towards the 660ti , looking at the benchmarks from

    http://www.anandtech.com/bench/CPU/2

    and

    http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html

tell me I'm wrong and ill listen.

They're not good benches to go by. The anandtech one gives no information on how the testing was done etc. Plus we want to OC to the XT to get maximum benefits. plus it's waay cheaper than the 660ti.

    http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/club3d_radeon_7870_joker_review,17.html

here's just one review of the card. Compare the FPS after overclocking to the FPS got with the 660ti. Yes, the 660ti overclocked isn't included in the benches on this review, but the 660ti doesn't overclock as well. And you're missing the key point - this card is over 50 euro cheaper and it's edging out a 660ti when overclocked!!!

Also i doubt those benches include the XT, which is more powerful than the normal 7870.

This is a review of the Sapphire version with both XT and 660Ti overclocked there's nothing in it, except for the price.

The Sapphire version has a better cooler, it's 25 quid more expensive on HWVS. Worth it if you have the cash.

Yea, it beats the 660ti in any game where it counted (as in, it lost when FPSs were in the 100s, like that matters). And it's much cheaper.

im not feeling the love for NVIDIA these days. but if you look at my post money is an issue and I intend to update next year and stay ahead of the next gen ps4/xbox infinity, .

660 (non TI ) now and upgrade next year or pay the $now and get a single gpu solution like 680

680 was used in unreal4 demo and imho beats ps4 hands down.

If money is a bit of an issue at the moment and you wanted a throwaway card to tide you over for a year or so, it might be worth looking at cheaper cards in the 130-150 price range like the 1GB HD7850, 650 Ti boost or HD7790. You have to do a few minor enough compromises on graphical quality setting no MSAA etc, but they would be decent enough.

You could get something like this delivered for as little as 550.

    Item|Price
    BitFenix Merc Alpha|€32.28
be quiet! SYSTEM POWER 7 500W|€53.84
    ASRock 970 Pro3, AM3+, ATX|€61.94
    2 x 4GB G.Skill PC3-12800U CL11-11-11-28|€55.94
AMD FX-6300 Prozessor, Boxed, Sockel AM3+|€102.99
    Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - Intel/AMD|€29.90
PowerColor Radeon HD 7790 TurboDuo OC, 1GB GDDR5|€133.34
    Seagate Barracuda 7200 1000GB, SATA 6Gb/s|€57.74
    Shipping|€18.99
    Total|€546.96

    lol thanks Marco. decisions decisions.

I'm moving back to pc after years of consoles , I love gaming on pc but I have learned from past experience to buy
parts that are common and are supported by dev's.

I want to be able to install a game and hit optimize (660ti) and sit back and enjoy . I know i would NOT be able to rest until i squeeze every last frame from the card, only to find out that it was a waste of time as the game itself was terrible :)

Ps4 and xbox Infinity use amd gpus based on the 7000 series so if anything next gen game optimisations should suit amd cards more.

I really want NVIDIA but F**K it , !!, cheers BloodBath.
