I want to know who pays for the big dresses and the gigantic cakes and why is the price such a secret.

Who are the people who watch this sh**e? Wanna be Gypsies?

At least we know they don't get their dresses from Abercrombie and Fitch

Yes ok, but where did they get their money?

I dunno. Why do people find watching parasitic wasp larvae dig their way out of a still living caterpillar so fascinating?

Some of dem wimmins I'd love to leave with a face like a painters radio.

That's as close as I would like to get though.

I want to understand the dresses. for instance why anyone would think its a good idea to put a communion child in a dress with no skirt at the front.
Yes the communion dress had a long train/skirt at the back (think November rain video ) but the front ended at the waist and there was a pair of spangly hot pants on show .

True story this, seen in ncw this week

    Working, where else?

You're not trying to suggest that travellers rob, steal, scam and commit crime to pay for such things, are you?

In the one episode thats running in the background Iv gathered that the Groom is Mammy'd, the Bride was taken out of school at 14 and became a slave...the groom has been arrested for something but bailed by the parents..then coped off with a stripper on his stag night/first night out of jail.

Does anyone find the showcasing of a minority group that have Irish accents a tad cringe inducing?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,648 ✭✭✭Cody Pomeray

I mainly watch it for how unsettling it is.

Same reason I like horror movies and AH.

"Oh look at those stupid travellers, they're thick as shiit, aren't they? Glad we're not like that."

    That's why.

Pure exploitation TV like Jerry Springer tbh.

I like watching the various tones of orange that the 'ladies' are morphing into.

It's so I can feel superior in the face of spectacularly crass consumerist vulgarity, believed to be the epitome of good taste by the undiscerning.

    It works.

Because when you watch it you're able to momentarily convince yourself that you might not be as fucked up as you think you are.

Don't think they've done themselves any favours by exposing their culture on TV.

Car crash TV. Few will admit to watching it because there is nothing to gain from it other than satisfying their curiosity. So, I'm going to admit it. I've watched it, and other such documentaries. They are a mysterious bunch.

I challenge anyone to go up to a lad that soaks his fists in petrol to ask him how he made his money for his daughters wedding. I'll get my popcorn.

I am waiting for the episode where UK CAB and revenue arrives and demands to know where the money came from to pay for these tacky tasteless freak shows

Well like, that's just your opinion. Mine is that some of these ladies are like scooters: fun to ride if no one sees ya! ;)

Don't think this is fair - there was a woman on RTE I think it was one evening. I've seen her on a few things speaking about being a member of the travelling community, and she said a lot of this show is not representative of travellers in general, and some of the things (i.e. grabbing) they had never even heard of

Signing on is part of their culture, you can hardly deny them that.

I have met travellers who don't sign on yes

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

The producers actually pay for some of them

Another pointless Traveller thread, they're like Death and Taxes, and they're a minuscule fraction of the populace in Ireland or the UK.

It's car crash tv that makes the viewer feel superior. Its the same reason people watch X Factor etc. I haven't watched gypsy weddings this year and if gypsy weddings bothers you then for God's sake don't watch Honey Boo Boo child. I've seen the ads for that and it makes me shudder. A fat, obnoxious, precocious kid with a pet piglet and a white trash family of knuckle dragging idiots. I won't be watching. Celebrating white trash, we must be near the bottom of the entertainment barrel now, surely:confused:

caravans for some, miniature Irish flags for everybody.

    I wonder the same thing.

But then again, I get my kicks by watching 22 millionaires in shorts kicking a bit of leather around.

Why does anyone watch anything? For funsies of course.

Because a show like that is gonna spend €30,000 to €40,000 on a wedding.

To be fair it would be well worth their whole to do so, the bigger and fatter the gypsy weddings are, the more lavish they are, they more shocked the viewer at home is going to be. I would say the producers easily drop €10-€20k on each wedding for access.

This. So much this. Plus it's a small subculture within Travelers. Mostly UK based ones.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

No its not, its glamorized for television obviously but travellers go all out for weddings communions family gatherings etc no expense spared.

Couldn't watch this show or how any working person could who pays taxes. I hate seeing them in real life and I damn sure don't want them on my tv screen becoming z list celebs!

Point-and-laugh tv, like the plainly useless X Factor contestants led to the slaughter.
