I'm in the blanch centre waiting at a carpark exit onto one of the main roads. A car has come off the roundabout and is on a straight of at least 150 yards. The whole way his left indicator is on in what I assume is signalling a turn into the carpark as there is no ther left turn before. So I pull out tI turn right on to the main road as I assume he is going left and he continues straight and proceeds to beep me. Perhaps I am wrong but I was fit to kill him as I assume I was in the right.

Well, am I right or wrong here?

    You are 100% wrong. Sorry.

You should never assume people will turn off where they indicate. He had the right of way so even though he was indicating, you shouldn't have moved out onto the road.

He's wrong for leaving his indicator on, however I think you might be in the wrong for assuming he was going to turn in. I would have waited until he started to make his turn into the car park, before proceeding.

I've mentioned that before, happens a lot around here, people signalling left and then not making the left turn. Chalk another one down to stoopidity, but don't cross their path (literally).

Not trying to sound like a know it all but that's your problem right there.

Never assume someone will do something especially in Ireland where indicators are concerned.

Yeah. I figured as much. What's the point of indicators if we can't rely on them. People rarely use them or use them correctly at all. Ah well. Won't be making that mistake again.

Outside Dublin people just rarely use them, never mind correctly.

Indicators are just that, an indication to do something. Doesn't mean you have to do it.

There was a spate a few years ago, where certain individuals would indicate to turn left, and wait for you to pull in front of them, before ramming you. Big insurance payout..!

I once heard a driving instructor ask

"What does it mean if someones indicator is flashing? It means their indicator works but that's all"

I was taught in my EDTs never trust any indicator especially on roundabouts. But when it comes to the OPs situation your not supposed to go until they start turning off the main road.

I don't know about Dublin but here in Cork working full set of break lights on a car is a miracle and not to be taken for granted, expecting them to use their indicators correctly or at all would be madness that'll get you killed.

The only assumption you can make when you see an indicator is that the bulb is working

Don't trust indicators on drivers coming from any type of corner as the wheel motion may not be enough to snap indicator stalk back into neutral again.

Personally I always wait until I see the wheels on the car actually turning before moving out into it's path. Slows things down a bit but then I never had a collision. Rather safe than dented.

Rather then indicators, trust the positioning of the other car and the speed. Fairly clear if they are going to take a junction then.

Just to echo the sentiments already expressed in the thread unfortunately you would be liable if there was a collision OP. It is unfortunate because in my opinion your mans/womans driving is downright appalling and wreckless. They would need a good kick in the whatsits for that.

Roundabouts are especially bad. Eidgets indicating as if they are coming off the roundabout and they proceed on around. To me that is sloppy, dangerous and downright inexcusable. Come on we've all pulled out based on an indicator signal at a roundabout. Many of the busy roundabouts around here you would need to if you were to get onto them at peak times especially

Irish people cannot use roundabouts or indicators. So it is dangerous to rely on indication on a roundabout!

I have seen people on roundabouts in the right lane indicate left and vice versa.

As stupid as it may seem, OP would be in the wrong. This is a case amongst many IMO where the law is a proverbial ass.

I learned a long time ago to ignore indicators. I think I was about a week into my driving life when I nearly pulled out in front of some ****wit who was indicating left but going straight. Be it through genuine error or just plain driver stupidity, indicators are not a trustworthy signal of driver intent.
