Indeed, seems pretty stupid, I mean it's not Samsungs fault people are too stupid to realise the OS + features + native apps require require some of the memory to exist.

How much storage space do I have?

    Surface RT:
The 32 GB version has approximately 15 GB free hard disk space.
The 64 GB version has approximately 44 GB free hard disk space.
    Surface Pro:
The 64 GB version has approximately 28 GB free hard disk space.
The 128 GB version has approximately 89 GB free hard disk space.

    ^ Just as bad.

HTC released the One as a 32GB version of the phone for this very reason, they also did not include a SD slot, whist samsung have.

Sense on the HTC takes up 8GB as does Touchwiz. People are daft if they expect the software to be smaller.

"we demand new features, better screen quality and more, but don't you dare increase the size of OS!!!"

    daft I say!

An "investigation" is a bit extreme maybe but touchwiz taking 8 gigs while stock android on the nexus 4 takin less than 3 is crazy too

But remember, your Average Joe is not aware of such things as the operating system and so on. They see 16Gb advertised, they expect 16Gb to be available.

people have been buying computers long enough now to know that actual "system" takes up a decent block of the advertised storage

that OS is huge but these extra features must go somewhere. I would only validate these complaints if the s4 had no SD slot

People? Again, do you think the average Joe can equate a computer with a mobile phone? Sure, you and I know that's what smartphones are, but there is a large demographic who "don't understand Gigabytes" and don't know what an operating system is.

I'd agree, its misleading and leaning towards morally wrong, but as above they all do it, so to pick on one company is unfair.

They're picking on the market leader, so long as they highlight that everyone else does it too then i don't have a problem. The more attention brought to this the more likely actual storage capacity will be advertised.

I don't use android and the vast majority of my phone's 32gb are available to me, but really I'd rather see actual free storage capacity as the marketed figure.

I don't think its too much to expect to buy a phone (or any device for that matter) advertised with 16 GB of storage space and have the option to use all 16 GB of that.

Its very false and misleading, its something advertising departments are always doing and if this investigation cuts down on this or forces a change in how storage space is advertised then I'd welcome it.

This is an easy solution. Make whatever is actually available on the phone the amount of available memory advertised. It's long been a pet peeve of mine the way they do this. It may have 16gb of memory, but if I can only access 8gb and this isn't made clear, it's false advertising. While we're at it, 1000kb is not a MB!

The thing is, all manufacturers do it, from PCs, laptops, tablets and phones.

I agree it's a pain when it happens, but it's not right for any one company to get the blame.

Ah come off it man. A bit of space for the system sure, but 40% of the capacity?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

All they gotta do is say both, eg: I9300 16GB(8.7 Accessible) and away we go.

Something like that could be easily written into consumer law but f'ck me if we'll see it in our lifetimes with the competency of our government. Fingers crossed the EU does it.

Formatting also takes about 10%. So a 16 gig device is 14.6 gig at most without anything getting loaded onto it.

And does that somehow make it right or acceptable?

Ah here, Samsung make enough money off people this isn't going to hurt them that much more than anybody else.

Nope, it doesn't. Never implied it did.

Apple make more, as do Microsoft.

My point is, it's fine to launch an investigation into this, it's not fine to make a patsy out of one company it's become cool to hate.
