Best Weight Loss Exercise

Just wondering what's the best exercise for general weight loss?

I do swimming, spinning and gentle jogging every week and enjoy them all. I'm about 4 stone overweight and would like to concentrate on one particular sport which would be best for weight loss.

I guess jogging is out? Or would I be better with a gym schedule? I use the rower and cross trainer about once a week as I prefer to be outside in the long evenings.

    Any advice very much appreciated.

Move quicker for shorter periods of time on a regular basis. Cut down on sugar.

I think Mike Boyle coined the exercise 'Table pushaways'.
Basically meaning diet is going to be your biggest influence.

There is no best sport, or no best way. You'll read on the internet and in glossy magazines about a million different methods, the best one is the one you enjoy most and are most likely to keep doing consistently.

Having said the above, some resistance training wouldn't do any harm if you can get some done.

Absolutely, I hate seeing people plug away doing cardio indoors...get into the fresh air.

Good one, haven't heard that phrase before. :P

yeah I'm loosing weight at a steady pace, about 1.5lb a week but was hoping to kickstart it a bit coming into the summer as have a number of events in July that I'm aiming for.

Just thought I could concentrate on one particular exercise to assist me.

I coined the phrase 'table pushbacks' in 2003 in a presentation to St Mary's College Rugby and have evidence of such so unless you can find a Boyle reference earlier than that I call bullsh*t.

p.s: If you do find a reference to that phrase earlier than that...then this conversation never happened and I will be deleting and or editing this post in future.

Table 'pushaways' though...it's a completely different phrase.

Yeah...and Dan John 'invented' all his game changes...Crossfit Ireland 'invented' all their mobility and stability work and on and on it goes...it's all completely different and yet so much the same. All divine inspiration I suppose.

I could start a thread with all the unique circumstances that have arisen in the last 20 years :)

    Agreed. It's all completely different.

I invented it all. Back when I invented fitness. Then I rested on Sunday and carb back loaded.

One type of exercise will give you one type of fitness. In my limited experience, strength work and things like circuit training will have an effect on your shape, but as long as you are exercising regularly, at a pretty decent effort level you will see results.

As said above, your diet will be most important by far.

As far as exercise goes, I find that HIIT works great. If you can combine the high intensity into resistance workouts, by the use of super sets with short breaks for example, then you get a great workout in a short amount of time. This way builds muscle and increases your metabolism also, so you'll be burning more calories consistently.

Hey :) I've lost 3 stone in the past 5 months through walking (Obviously eating healthier aswell). I go on a brisk 5k walk about 4-5 times a week and I definitely wouldn't have lost the weight if I hadn't done it. I'm now moving onto jogging but I really love the walking for starting out! It's free and once you get used to it it's really easy and enjoyable. I burn about 400 calories per walk :) I also started going to the gym but to be honest I burn more calories for free on my walks and it's worked the best for me around my schedule!Hope that helps!
