    Evening all,

A selction of photos, courtesy of KZG 68 of 461 arriving at Connolly this afternoon with the Special from Whitehead RPSI. While 461 retired to the yard for the night, 072 brought the MKII set to Inchicore for stabling.

    Pictures start at http://smu.gs/10JklGo

Nice pics but the idea of rattling around Ireland in a steam hauled MkII doesn't do it for me. I have memories of better days when the two-day tour consisted of vintage stock like the GSWR (1906 built) 12-wheeler No.861.....the "South Kerry"(1980), "Ben Bulben" (1981) and "Thomond" railtours come to mind. Still, anything is better than nothing. Possibly the second last 'special' to traverse Limerick/Ballybrophy??

Those are some nice photos. Movements like this are on borrowed time I'm fearful of that.

The main tour will use the Cravens set. Only workings north of the border have to use the MK2's as they have the central door locking, required for NIR

Yesterday was Whitehead-Connolly and the green mark 2's(461)

Friday is Diesel day and it's a run to Sligo with a stop in Dromod en route and a slow run home. The expectation was for a 201 to head this service, which has never reached Sligo in passenger traffic.

Saturday is Connolly-Waterford diesel and Waterford-Limerick steam (461); a light movement for 461 is also planned due to driver hours being tight.

Sunday is Limerick-Ballybrophy-Connolly (461). From here the Mark 2's and 186 will take it home to Whitehead.

I've the paths somewhere so when I get hold of them I'll post up vauge arrivals and departues for interested parties.

Sounds silly to ask but it's a good question. Yes they are allowed to run in reverse (it's called tender or tank first, depending on the engine itself), subject to a speed restriction. There is a drawgear switch on a steam engine to allow reversed movement. Where possible they run chimney first but it is awkward these days given the lack of turntables.

Am I right in thinking the only working turntable is at Connolly opposite the DART platforms or are there others?

Add two at Connolly, one at Inchicore and one in Claremorris to the list. Trains can also be turned on the triangles at Belfast, Lavistown and Limerick Junction. I know I'm forgetting on as well so somebody help me out here :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,733 ✭✭✭✭corktina

presumably 461 will turn at Limerick Junc and run up to Ballybrophy mainline LE, taking over from 186 there running from Limerick via Nenagh....I'm guessing Ballybrophy would be the place to be....got a time?

186 is to take on the Mark 2's from Amiens Street tomorrow. 461 is on duty for the southern leg.

ah yes, misread the earlier info....

so tender first to Ballybrophy and chimney first up the main line?

I'd expect so, yes as it will cut out two long light engine runs to Limerick Jct. If I was to do anywhere this weekend to see her then the Broph is the place; the reversal manouvers are some sight.

I remember "Slieve Gullion" being turned on Ballybrophy table in the early 80's. There was lots of GSWR/GSR crockery buried at the old loco shed - probably just where the new track is now.

One of the quirkes of Irish railways was that the introduction of the 121 class led to turntables being kept at a few locations nationwide. Indeed, one had to be installed into Great Victoria Street to facilitate the locos. This came after a turntable had been removed from the station by the UTA as they planned the end of steam :)

Unless I'm mistaken, isn't the table still there, in the bushes between the main line and the branch?
The turntable in Tralee is also still usable.

I was searching for a pic online and the most recent reference that I could find was 2002 which said it was still there in the bushes. There's no road access up there so scrapping could have been a problem.

The turntable in Youghal is in situ but the pit is filled in to prevent accidents.

It's usable alright but the turntable siding has several bogie flats dumped on it.

I wonder if Rock Street Cabin is still stored in the loco shed?

Anyone know did 461 travel to Waterford on Thrusday or Friday. It was a change from seeing ICR's on the platform yesterday evening.

Leaving Limerick tomorrow at 9:05. Crawling up the mainline with stops everywhere en route. Due into Ballybrophy at 12:00 and leaving at 12:40. Back into Dublin around 15:35 and the Mark 2 set and 186 are due out of Amiens Street at 16:10.

As always, time are subject to change so be prepared for long waits.

Via Nenagh to and from Limerick is the mainline, not that silly line via the junction.

Jeez, what sort of a gricer are you if you know not that? :pac:

    Evening folks,

Pictures from the Saturday leg of the RPSI's Golden Vale Railtour from Dublin Connolly to Limerick via Carlow, Waterford and Clonmel. Diesel Loco 072 worked the first leg of the tour to Waterford, where Steam Loco 461 was waiting to take over for the run to Limerick over the South Tipperary line.

    The train was photographed at:
    - Cush (Cherryville Jct - Athy).
    - Fenniscourt (Mhuine Bheag - Lavistown Jct).
    - Waterford
    - Dunkitt Viaduct (Waterford - Carrick-on-Suir).
    - Carrick-on-Suir.
    - Ballinderry (Carrick-on-Suir - Clonmel).
    - Ballynaraha (Carrick-on-Suir - Clonmel).
    - Clonmel.
    - Barn Demense (Clonmel - Cahir).
    - Cahir.
    - Tipperary.
    - Pallasgreen (Limerick Jct. - Dromkeen).

    Photos now up at http://smu.gs/17fflSy

    Enjoy,
    The Wanderer.

Via Nenagh, WAS the mainline, not anymore though!

Well done to RPSI. Yesterday's tour to Sligo was very good. 072 is a brilliant machine.

Lovely to be flying along the Sligo line again on a set of Cravens with an 071 screaming away. Add to that a lovely creamy pint of Guinness, perfect!

It did yeah. When she arrives at Ballybrophy her tender is facing Cork, leaving her chimney first for the (long) run home to Dublin :)
