It was originally going to be called 'plank.ie' but Pat Kenny had bagsied that domain name.

Before the internet, people here used to stick messages up on wooden fences and others would reply,they wore ski masks to preserve their anonimity.
Because wooden fences were preferred the term 'boards' became popular and it stuck even when the messages were posted online instead of on a fence.

True story.

Its a message board OP, People write or apply a message to a board, which is what you are doing right now, as are the rest of us, we are placing a message on a board. Boards.ie have many of these boards, hence boards, the plural of board.

These so called boards are based in Ireland, many with an Irish slant, or emphasis, hence the .ie part, and so its called boards.ie.

Short answer, it started with a load of geeks playing Dune, or Quake or something or other.
