BMW 520D Timing Chain Failures

Starting a new thread as I don't want to hi-jack others.
It seems that every thread that references a 520D mentions the timing-chain issue.

I recently bought an 09 E60 - Imported from the UK with a nice spec and reasonably low mileage. UK BMW service completed in Feb.
    This replaced my 04 E60 520i.

What should I be looking for as warning signs? Any preventative maintenance that can be undertaken?

    Thanks,
    Donut.

For a start I would get onto BMW UK to see if there has been any warranty work already on this. If you are lucky it will have failed already and been fixed. Unlikely though on a low mileage car. Nothing you can do to prevent a failure, and it may never come, best bet is just to enjoy the car, but don't ignore the death rattle if it comes.

The engine will rattle like a bag of spanners. Watch this video:

If the car has a full BMW service history then you can make a goodwill claim against BMW who may cover the cost of the parts. A good BMW indy can also do the job for under €2k these days afaik.

The chain also can rattle from between 1000/2000 rpm as well that don't show at idle , regarding goodwill it don't have to have full bmw history but it does help it's effecting late 07/ early 09 I see them all the time
