Ok, so we have a car that has a valid nct till May 25th & got a booking letter from the nct saying the only available date is July 8th, is it true that if they cant fit you in by the expiry date of last test or four weeks later then you can get a free test? I tried to get a date for may or June but there's none left!

    Cheers Brian

Keep ringing and looking for cancellations

Did you check the NCT website for a closer available date? Cancellations pop up all the time or alternatively ring them and they will put you on a priority list.

But to avoid this in future if it is the car's first NCT then it can be booked 6 months before it's due date, if it is it's second or more test then it can be booked 3 months in advance of it's due date.

I did get my money back from a test before as it had gone over the waiting time but im not so sure if they still do it. It took 4 phone calls and an email to get my refund. That was 4 yrs ago.

Did you accept the booking for the 8th July?

Fact is that they have to provide you with a free test, if they are not able to give you a test within 28 days (from day you are trying to book), but only if you request it.

If you agreed for any different date, then it's too late.

In fact I suppose free tests don't happen, as if you ring them and request a booking within 28 days (you have to specifically say that you are requesting it), then they will provide you with it.

I'll give them a ring & request a better date as I went online & did unfortuneatle confirm the July date as it was the only one available at the time:mad:

If you confirmed the July date, then you can not avail of "free test after 28days rule"...

You should have requested that before you accepted any date.

Over last few years, all my NCT booking were that I rang them and requested date within 28 days. I always got it. I never bothered booking online or asking for cancellations. All you need to do is just request it straight away.

Keep checking the website. I initially could only get the middle of July for my father but I checked the website every morning and last week got a slot for the 20th of this month. Best times to check are early in the morning or late in the evening.

Is the 28 day rule, 28 calendar or 28 working days?

I called them on Mon 29th, they tried to give me a mid-July date. I told them that this would be fine as long as I got it for free (outside 28 days). They then told me I would be put on a list and would get a text confirming a test within 28 days.
Heard nothing back, so called them again last Monday, and yesterday received a text confirming the NCT on 28th May.

This is 29 days after my original call. Just wondering now whether I should say nothing until I get there on 29th and then ask for the free test, or should I call them again to confirm that I will get the test for free.
    Thanks,
    dilallio

    dilallio,
I say defo organize before hand, you'll ahve no proof on the day and they'd be within their rights to refuse to allow you to do a test without payment, otherwise everyone would be doing it!

Btw, does anyone know if you drive up on the day is it possible to go on standby for an NCT?
