Transvulcania 2013

Might be of interest to some.

This weekend is Transvulcania, the ultra-trail marathon on La Palma.

52 miles (83km) with 4,000 metres of climb, with arguably the best ultra-trail field ever assembled.

Massive hype around the event. All the big names are there and it’s set up to be an epic race.

Trail running specialists such as Killian Jornet, Timothy Olson (Western States winner), Anton Krupica (Leadville, 2nd in Western States) vs the very fast road runner in the shape of Sage Canaday, a 2.16 marathon runner who’s switched to trails and ultra marathons.

It may end the ‘if you can’t go fast, you go long’ debates. Or re-ignite them.

There’s plenty more who could take the win.

It should be easy to follow online at the likes of www.irunfar.com.

    Here is their preview: http://www.irunfar.com/2013/05/2013-transvulcania-ultramarathon-mens-preview.html

    Anyone else following it?

Probably the latter as Sage moved to Ultra and Mountaining running after a disappointing 43rd in the US Marathon Trials and has since been broken Ultra Course records and got a 12th place at mountain running World Championships but still has aspirations of returning to Marathon running at the Olympics

Anton Kuprica has been suffering with fever for the last few days. According to talkultra he's on the verge of pulling out. Shame, as it would have been great to see how they all finished up.

    Officially pulled out now

That's a real pity. He's had awful luck with injury and illness.

Jornet was leading after 7km but Canaday has taken the lead at 26km and is ahead of Jornet by 3 mins.

    Olson 7 mins back.

^^Don't know much about that island but it looks a lot greener than I imagined, I was thinking of the slopes of Mordor type landscape.

Mordor would be closer to the rim:

    Race is hotting up.

Canaday has just been passed by Jornet and Hernado at the 57km mark.
Hernado leads Jornet by 2.30 with Canaday back in third, roughly 90 seconds back. Olson is back 13 mins from the lead.

It looks like Canaday lost about 3 mins in the last 3 or 4 km on the climb to the highest point of the race.

It’s about a 20km descent now which is supposed to favour Jornet over Canaday. I reckon he’ll put in at least 10 mins on him. Then there’s a tough 5km back uphill to the finish.

Before the race, Jornet picked Hernado as one to watch. Olson is 12 mins back but is a strong finisher. He chased down Canaday in 100km race in New Zealand, cutting a 20 min lead to just 3 mins over the last 30km.

Jornet and Hernado running together and have opened an 8 minute gap on Canaday. Another 8km of downhill before the last 5km on road. Be surprised if Canaday can come back.

The women's race is also tied with Emelie Forsberg and Nuria Picas leading.

Jornet takes the win, new course record.

Won by over four mins from Hernado (also under old course record). Jornet put 12 minutes into Canaday on the descent.

Emilie Forsburg wins the women's race; 8.13.21
Nuria Picas second in just over a minute behind her
