Advice on which jeep to buy

Hi all, as the title says im looking for advice and opinions on which jeep (commercial) to buy, ok firstly (and dont laugh :)) we have a strict budget of 1500 euro ( its purely going to be used as a part time workhorse) but the main reason im posting is the jeep HAS to have the capability of pulling ( with trailer full of sand and other building mats ) up a VERY steep hill, now this hill......it is almost impossible to get into second gear in a car !!, the only time im able to do so is if the car has no passengers and no load, this hill is steep!!!. We have just bought an old cottage in need of renovation at the top of this hilll ( which is about 100mtrs ish long ) and i'll soon be looking to pull building materials up, hence the need for an old jeep with a v good pulling power, we're not looking for comfort nor looks just good ol fashioned strength and reliability. Hopefully you good people could give me some advice, thanks guys.

Thanks Eric, I was thinking of a fourtrak and there are lots of farmers have them round here so presume they must be good, would love a land rover defender but they are so highly priced even for an old dog :( also was looking at a pajero swb as I see many of them advertised and within our budget, or is there a reason for this ???

For 1500 you should get an average 3.1 Trooper. Make sure 4wd works, as it uses a mixture of mechanical and electrical/vacuum lines. Also budget for a new timing belt (about 250 fitted) unless you can REALLY trust the seller. Lots of 3.0 troopers for small money out there, but you can look at old posts regarding these, and their problems. Fourtraks are getting hard to find in good condition. Rust taking a toll on the arches/floor by now, but they have very good mechanicals. I sold an old 1988 leaf spring model about 7 years ago, and sorry now I didn't keep it, as they are getting rare, and a fine little workhorse/classic.

older pajero's are a good jeep, the 2.5 is meant to be a better engine than the 2.8, all though the 2.5 has a timing belt where the 2.8 has a chain, valve cover gaskets tend to leak on them so have a good look at them, some have issues with the 4x4 shift mechanism, it works on vacuum, usually a easy fix, just make sure on the test drive that all the ranges select and the center amber diff light doesn't flash, i've had both a mk1 with 2.5 non intercooled turbo, a 1995 2.8, and now a 2005 2.5. i think the 1989 mk1 was the best of them all
