BMW Airbag recall

Just out on the news that BMW are now recalling 3 series due to an airbag issue.
So far it seems only the 3 series, M3 from the E46 series.

More info on the journal and below.

On the heels of the massive airbag recall just last month, which included a total of 3.4 million Japanese automobiles from Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Mazda, German automaker BMW has announced that it will recall 42,000 of its 2002-03 3 Series models (E46 platform) for the same problem. The recall is blamed on a single defective part, all from the same supplier, which may cause the airbag to catch fire or send metal fragments towards passengers in the front seats. BMW spokesman Dave Buchko told the Detroit News that the automaker knows of no improper "deployments or injuries related to this issue in any BMW."

The part in question, supplied from a company named Takata, was manufactured incorrectly at its Moses Lake, WA, plant. The company also disclosed that some airbag components may have been exposed to moisture at another one of its locations, in Mexico. According to Takata, there have been six incidents worldwide (four in the United States) and none have resulted in injuries.

Spotted that yesterday. Can we expect a letter in the post or do we contact BMW ourselves?

Apparently all affected owners would be contacted...I'd imagine though since it's back in 2002/2003 that a lot of cars would have changed owners so probably best to contact local dealer I'd imagine or BMW directly.

42,000 cars. I'd imagine it's close to a statistical certainty that at least one person will die while driving to or from the garage to have this theoretical problem attended to. Makes one think, doesn't it?

And this, boys and girls, is the way insurance people actually think! I thought accountants were bad! :D

A few hundred thousand actually. Toyota/Volkswagon/Honda/Nissan all used the same airbag manfacturer.

They get the owner details from the Motor Tax Office.

Can we actually expect to get a letter though? I imported my 2002 320d from the UK. OK it's registered with the motor tax office obviously but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Can I call into my local dealer with a reference or similar? I know well if I go into my local dealer i'll be faced with a

2 hr 45 minutes later and the job's done.

While I was there I took a look through the used car yard and the showroom in general. 1 petrol car in the whole place, a white convertible Z4. Feckin diesel.
