Single trip travel insurance?

    Hello
We are traveling to Portugal next week with a one year old and a three year old. We do not have any health insurance, and I am thinking I should get some type of cover in case one of the children get sick.
Can anybody recommend an insurance company that would work well in this scenario? We have other insurances with Aviva, car, home etc, but there seem to be other companies with different offers.
    All advice is welcome.

There are loads of companies online where you can get travel insurance - all the major companies (Aviva, Allianz, Axa etc) and some others such as 123.ie, blue insurance, tesco, getcover etc etc etc.
If you booked a package via an agent, they can add on insurance for you, or if you booked with Aer Lingus or Ryanair you can just go into your booking online and add insurance.

Usually it works out cheaper to get multitrip insurance than single trip if you are likely to make more than 1 trip per year.

    Thanks Little Ted.
Is there no notable difference between the packages so? I would be inclined to just add it onto our Aer Lingus booking so to make it easier?

Have you got your EHIC? This will cover you for emergencies in the public hospitals in Portugal, it won't cover you for repatriation (air ambulance back to ireland etc). It's the replacement for the E111.

Many of the companies I listed use RSA or Travellers as the underwriters, however you need to check the policy and what is covered to see if two quotes are comparable. There are numerous types of cover and levels of cover - the best thing to do is get a quote and check the policy details and see what is covered for that amount. Then decide. I'm think (but I am not certain) that Aer Lingus use Mondial as the underwriter.

I've always used getcover.ie and I've found their cover quite good. I compared it with VHI's multi-trip, which has significantly smaller maximums for the different sections, even though it is cheaper if you travel more than once. Of course the hope is that you never have need to claim.
