Dying my hair from a box!

I was blonde (highlights but basically turned into a full head of block blonde!) for years and went slightly darker there a few months ago.

Did it properly, had the tint etc... all done and got a second colour in there a couple of months ago.

It's faded now and I can see the goldy hue from the blonde undertones coming through so I'm looking to dye it again, but haven't the money for the hairdresser this time!

I know nothing about dying at home so I'm looking for any tips!

Do I use permanent or non permanent?
Will the colour more than likely be darker than expected because of the blonde undertones in my hair (so should I pick a slightly lighter shade than what I actually want to be?)
Any general recommendations for brands etc..?
I know those questions may sounds stupid but I literally haven't a notion!

I should add I'm dark blonde/light brown at present which is my natural colour, wanting to stay the same!

    Hi!
I've dyed my hair dark blonde for years, and originally from highlighted blonde like yourself.
I used the clairol nice and easy permanent dye in 106 or 106A, and I found them brilliant. I had sections of hair that were lgihter/darker than the rest like yours and this dye really gave an even look. It's a perfect dark ash blonde shade.
I thought I may have had to go lighter too, but this colour is very true to the results shown on the box.

I bought the new L'Oreal Préférence Mousse Absolue . It's supposed to be the new revolutionary reuseable non-drip mousse hair colour. I spotted it in Boots
a few weeks ago and asked one of the floor staff if they knew anything about it. The girl went away and came back with another girl who said she had used it and found it to be brilliant. I told her that my hair is totally grey so my roots would come through as grey and would the colour mousse cover the grey. She said she too was grey and it worked for her. So I bought it at the promo price of €14.99

I used it today and I am so disappointed with it. It didn't cover the grey at all
but the worst part is that now my hair looks really dull and feels very heavy.
I now have to go to the trouble of buying a new product and doing my hair all over again . L'Oreal need to re-evaluate this product because it does NOT
    cover grey hair

Mousee hair dye is known for being pretty crap tbh. I know people who have tried multiple different brands and they've all been terrible.

Hi candykisses, I've read some awful reviews of that product. Apparently it's not true to colour even on non-grey hair. I'd advise bringing it back to whatever shop you bought it and asking for a refund (not fit for intended purpose). If they won't give you a refund, contact L'Oreal.
    Thanks for warning us all!

Agree with biohaiid re mousse colours in general, except Olia which works really well for me :)

OP, if you know what brand and colour of dye your hairdresser uses then you could buy it yourself in a beauty supply shop.

I was in boots one day and happened to overhear one of the staff talking to a customer about colour b4 (the hair dye remover), the customer had bleach blonde hair with a few inches of dark roots and the woman working in boots assured her that of course it would get the bleach out and return her hair to its usual brown colour

I quietly interrupted and said that a colour remover could never return bleached hair back to its previous dark colour.
