No official announcements or advertisements as of yet but I think it's time for a fresh thread with the upcoming cadetship for this year. I have heard from a couple of sources myself that it is indeed going ahead, as have others.

There have been a few rumours posted in the previous thread. One being that training is to start in Q3 / Q4 of this year.

If anyone hears anything new, chip in!

Good idea to start a new thread. Big question being, how many cadets do they want this time and what will they have to contribute to the scheme.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 181 ✭✭Contrails

They are indeed big questions. It will be interesting to see if they bump up the entry requirements as well. I.e. be in 3rd level education or have some hours in the air or industry experience etc. They can certainly afford to be picky.

Let's save the pages of angst and accusations at the outset: it can be confirmed that only sons/daughters/cousins/neighbours of current captains need apply, as all pilots ever recruited by EI have been in this category and no-one else has ever been successful at applying. Furthermore, every single pilot ever recruited was a vastly inferior candidate to all the other applicants and only succeeded due to nepotism. All failed candidates are in fact sky gods and should have been recruited as direct entry captains. The whole process is indeed completely unfair and nobody has any chance of succeeding.
Now that we've covered the ground rules as understood by boardsies, you can all get on with life and save yourselves a year of posting your unique understanding of how the process works.
To the rest of you, good luck.

Being the son, daughter, or cousin etc of an Aer Lingus Captain wont get you in off the bat, but to suggest it is not a major advantage and wont set extra weight to your application or it's consideration is naive in the extreme.

That was tongue in cheek I think... :D:p

This Cadetship offers an interesting little window in to the changing world of Irish Aviation.

Last time this started there were guys complaining about the 100s of Irish jet pilots who would take a demotion to get a job in Aer Lingus and how it was all so unfair on them. Why were Aer Lingus running a cadetship? Surely some of these guys must meet their standards? Were Aer Lingus just too aloof and wanted their own stock? Why invest so much in new pilots when there are 100s who would bite your hand off for a job?
These were all points raised...however this is a bit of a misjudgment of the actual playing field here.

Had you asked my opinion during the last cadetship I would have said the same as above and been equally mystified. However through actual introduction to commercial aviation and mixing with guys in their "first job" I have seen that this is not the way it is.
This group of Irish pilots(many with 3000h+ in Ryanair) who complain and are being seemingly passed over by Aer Lingus in favour of a cadetship are like a ship passing Aer Lingus HQ in the night. They desperately want to be in Aer Lingus but Aer Lingus dont want them. The main reason in many cases? Age!
But all jet pilots out there are not old men you say! This is true, however an airline like Aer Lingus wants guys young enough to be Captains some day and most of the currently employed guys out there with that potential have their eyes set on the left seat in the East. I know Irish guys in Ryanair who are not even considering Aer Lingus. I hold it as an onward option but it is not top of my list.

So there you have the answer for anyone wondering why Aer Lingus are running cadetships. It's for the simple reason that they are not the only act in town for young lads and lassies who have their wings. When they run DE campaigns many of the applicants are over 35 or nearing 40 and do not have the ideal shelf life Aer Lingus would want. Those who are young(under 30) with a few 1000 hours are looking at the big money elsewhere and are less concerned with returning to the family and/or financial roots they have in Ireland. Hell even some of their former cadets are looking for the big money elsewhere!

Best of luck to those who apply. But if you do not make it dont crawl under a rock and die, keep plugging away at it! It's a wide world of flying out there!

Does anyone know what information they want for the online application? Do they want you to upload a pre prepared CV or do they just ask their own questions?

I'm not applying unless XWB comes back here with advice......

Ah sure he'd be too busy helping the new cadets settle in the 320 now. Champion of the airways that he is.

I was talking to XWB, he was telling me his friends sister's boyfriend works with a guy who delivers Chinese to this lad who knows a guy that plays football with a guy who goes out with a girl who is second cousins with a bus driver who gave Christoph a lift to the airport once... He found out they are taking on 6000 cadets this year, good news I guess!

    Upfront info this time:
The training programme takes 14 months to complete and consists of a number of phases. ........A number of training locations are being considered. The final choice will be advised to you later in the recruitment process. Opportunities for travel home during the course will be limited.

The approximate cost of the initial training programme is €100,000. If you are successful in your application you will be required to fund approximately 25% of this training cost during the course. Upon successful completion of the course, a further 25% approximately will be recovered by Aer Lingus by means of reduced salary over a number of years. The full details of this will be outlined at a later stage in the recruitment process.

They said that last time too!

Bloody pay to fly scum! All of you! You should wait for a proper cadetship and not just run for Daddy's credit card!!:D

    Stupid

The also ask your religion, your nationality, your orientation, I think that's a standard form that goes with most application processes AFAIK. None of them have anything to do with being a pilot.

They also ask if you gender identity is the same now as when you were born!

To be honest I'd be tempted to say no and say I'm TG because they are more likely to put me through for fear of discrimination!:D Anybody got a nice pair of heels I could borrow?

Won't let me apply as the page won't load. Can anyone one tell me the requirements? As in are there any specific Leaving Cert grades that they are looking for?

Page won't load for me either, probably too much load on the server or they screwed up something on their end. I don't think they asked for specifics, It asks for educational qualification and the result you got so I just put down LC, 500 points, 7 honours... Seemed to suit the way they phrased the Question... Not sure exactly what they wanted.

So ideally I should be a black, gay, Muslim, transgender, woman from Timbuktu, who's 55 years old who knows no one who works there, then they'd really have to hire me to show just how tolerant they are. :D

I think the minimum requirements for LC results are C in pass maths and english and a pass in at least two higher level subjects. Could be wrong but I think that's what I saw last night, can't check now because the server is down.

Yeah I think it was 2 higher C's.

There is no facility to actually put that in though. They never give you a place to put your specific exam results bar attaching a CV. It's just the level of education you achieve. I put in LC and then the CAO points but you couldnt actually put you're result per subject. I attached a CV which has my results though.

Also the question about ATPL exams, they ask if you have sat any and then only give 3 slots to put an exam and result!

The form seems poorly designed in places!!

No point not looking around, even if they don't switch it might make FTE offer a better rate to them.

I doubt EI payed list price for the last class anyways, between the fact that they were giving them 20 students in bulk, but also the publicity of being able to say "Aer Lingus send their pilots here", they probably would have made an offer to teach them. I'm sure it's put out to tender each time.

    That's still a brilliant offer

Shame I don't qualify yet and it might not be around when I do.

It doesn't ask for third level does it? The "Apply Now" button is giving me a redirect loop.

It says having a 3rd level qualification or currently studying for one is an advantage IIRC.

Is anyone able to get into it? I've been locked out since 11 this morning...

I submitted my completed application last night.

There was no box to tick to confirm you have the required maths grade and 2 higher Cs was there? They stated it as a requirement but never actually asked you to confirm by "yes/no" or state the results you got?

Application form is available again, according to the Aer Lingus facebook page, high loads on the server caused it to crash.

Was just able to log in right now

Here are the requirements in case it crashes again:
    Essential criteria:
You must be 17 years of age on or before the 1st January 2013
You must be fluent in English, both spoken and written
You must be eligible to live and work permanently in the EU and possess an unrestricted worldwide passport.

You must be able to pass a full security and background check.

You must be able to obtain a JAA Class 1 Medical, including successfully passing a colour blindness test. (Candidates may be requested to provide proof of this at interview.)

You must be willing to partially fund the Cadet Pilot Training Programme.

    Educational criteria:
You must hold a Leaving Certificate or equivalent or be completing the Leaving Certificate in 2013
If you have completed the Leaving Certificate, please attach your results
If you have completed a 3rd level qualification, please attach your results
    You will require a minimum of 6 subjects;

English and Mathematics minimum grade C in ordinary level
    Plus
2 Higher level subjects, minimum grade C

    Desirable Criteria:
Candidates holding or currently studying for a 3rd level qualification.

I have to say it's quite attractive, I think a few cadetships I came across required you to be 18 to enter, at which point some students would be halfway through first year in college..not that there's too much hope for fresh 17 year olds.

Also it asks for a C in Maths and English, only Ordinary and it asks you to attach your results.

Is a PPL and a heap of hours plus fully completed ATPL theory regarded and a 3rd level qualification per say?

There were a couple of last year's crop that almost had CPLs when they were selected.

The guy at the FLYER Exhibition said he was training for his CPL in Atlantic when he was taken on.

The Application form for the cadetship asks if you did any ATPL exams and asks for results.

Last year's rule seemed to be if you had not been issued a CPL you were still in the hunt.

I'm aware that there's some speculation going on as to the 'Education details' section, but is there a possibility they might want us to fill in our separate LC results, for each subject separately, into several different 'Education details'?

I attached a scan of my leaving certificate along with my CV, so that should tick that box if it comes down to it...

I would say that is exactly what they want you to do. Hence the reason the option is "Subject/Qualification". Just writing down down LC and the points you got is not what they are asking for in my opinion...could be wrong though. Lets hope they dont shortlist people by how good they understand the application form :P

Seems odd thought that they'd make you write out your school/college 7-12 times, for each subject. And that they ask the date like that. IIRC the last cadetship process gave specific slots for you to put your subjects and results into...

My LC results are in my CV. I just put down Leaving Certificate, dates etc... I seriously doubt they want you to write down the institution, dates, qualification type for every single subject.

I'd imagine when it says "subject/ qualification title" it's referring to something like 'BA in Business Studies' which is your area of study and qualification.

Either way I wouldn't worry too much. People will ALWAYS interpret an application form differently. As long as your results are there somewhere, that's all that matters.

Yeah possibly, the date thing is a bit funny alright. Either way once you slip the results in somewhere it should be ok.

Yeh, I feel confident enough just giving them a scan of the certificate. If they wanted it in each field so that a computer could have read it in, they would have made special fields for it I think. Just put them in somewhere seems to make the most sense. :)
