The generous hourly teaching rate includes a payment for planning and assessment.

No. It's considered part of the job. I used to be paid hourly (still am sometimes for extra bits). Now on contract. Somebody inevitably raises this question at least once a year at meetings. Your payment includes a nominal amount for assessment.

Everybody is paid, but nobody is paid extra to do the extra bits that are really just part of the job.

Everybody is assessed. Some officially, as in the case of accredited course. Others, non-officially, in the case of more 'for-the-interest' type things. Even in the absence of official assessment though, I'd certainly expect any tutor to reflect on the course as a whole, and on what each student got from it, on some level. Depends what you're teaching. A 'for example' might be Maths Lever 5, which is assessed, while Thai Cooking (as a hobby course) is not. Tutors are paid the same though.

The system is a bit of a mess. I'm not denying that.

Rates range from around 11-23 per script for fetac level 5 in the full time Vec sector and community schools. Night classes are not paid extra as included. Private sector is different

    Ah, explanation! Nice one.

Seems to depend where you work OP. Or rather, under what label.

im on the east coast , delivering 7 modules at level 4 including math's (not my qual.) even though there is math's teacher on site , thought sure i overheard reference to payment for level 5 assessment corrections in staff room today so was just wondering?

Yes, there is payment for marking of modules in the final exams or portfolios at level 5. Much of the work is assessed as it is handed up though, so that is part of the normal job.

In our place (VEC) there is a list of which subjects attract extra payment at levels 4 and 5. I know this because I teach maths and was a bit annoyed to discover it wasn't on the list. :(

Are you teaching on PLC courses? If so, there is an extra payment to reflect the extra work involved in locally devised asssessment for these modules.

I don't know if this applies to anyone on this thread, but if it does, the deadline to get this in to FETAC is this Friday 14th June.

    Gen info at:

Hi I teach Fetec level 5 and had such a job getting paid for Local devised assessment this year(so did all the other tutors) eventually I got it in my last payslip and heard a rumour that we wont be getting it for future reference. Thats all well and good but when you have numerous classes and numerous modules with big classes, the marking takes an awful long time. The hourly rate is good at 46 euro an hour (depending on what you teach) but by the time you take into consideration time and effort of printing, photocopying, travelling to and from classes, contacting students on your own phone, It is not worth it in my opinion. Marking takes such a long time and has to be perfect for external assessor to recheck. Theres a lot to be said for going into a job, doing a days work and going home, with Fetec, there are students constantly texting, ringing and e-mailing with queries, apologies and assignments. Its not a job I plan on returning to after doing it for so long if they refuse to pay for marking.
