Hi guys,
Have been a windows user so far - so don't have any experience with android tablets. If a tablet has a USB port (I think some of them don't?), can I plug a USB 3G dongle into it for internet access? Can android tablets use the USB port as a network interface?

thanks

Yep,my ould cheepo China Ployer Momo Bird 11 can do that, 3g dongle,

These are the ports, shown below....

you use host USB for Dongles, and other devices, like wireless keyboard connector, USB Drive, Hard Drive, etc.URL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_On-The-Go"]Host = OTG port[/URL

Note, there is also HDMI port, which works a treat.....and normal USB port.

For LAN network connection, I think you can use usb host-RJ45 adapter, the OTG port, something like this:

Check out Amazon, or eBay, or somewhere like that.

I would get a 3G dongle which has wifi capability. Also known as mifi devices.

This then just means that you switch it on and connect to the wifi.
If the connection is saved it will connect automatically when available.

Some of the USB dongles require an application to connect. This typically will not be available on your Android device and may make it more difficult to configure

If it is a wifi enabled 3G dongle, then it will also have a USB connector should you wish to use it. But you'd probably end up using the wifi connection most often.

It also means that you can position the mifi device elsewhere from where you are located - for example at the window in order to get a better 3G signal, while you're elsewhere in the house/room/office.

Also, some tablets do not have a very usable USB port - i.e. the USB port is only for charging.

Thanks, but its for internet while travelling around France. My only contract free internet option is a pay as you go 3G dongle.

You're welcome.

However, what i am saying does make sense.

You can purchase a contract free 3G dongle which also has wifi.

Your wireless devices connect to it via WiFi and the dongle connects to your service provider via pay as you go 3G.

It also means that multiple devices can connect to the internet simultaneously via the 3G dongle rather just the one the usb is connected to.

Heres: a few examples:

Whichever one you choose, just make sure that it is or can be unlocked (usually someone on ebay doing this) so that you can use other sim cards on it.

I have the one from 3 as i travel to the North and the rest of the UK quite often and my 3 broadband topup here is valid in those areas as well.

Unfortunately they don't offer service in France though.

I get ya now :)
I'll be buying the dongle when I get to France off one of their operators, no sense in roaming. Maybe you can get the mifi option from them, but if not I guess I'd need something like this to get the mifi feature....

Pricey though.
