they have been missing about 10 years

    http://www.newsnet5.com/dpp/news/local_news/cleveland_metro/Cleveland-police-dispatch-Missing-teens-Amanda-Berry-and-Gina-DeJesus-found-alive

CLEVELAND - Cleveland police said missing teens Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and a third woman were found in a west side house on Monday.
Hundreds of people gathered in the streets near 2207 Seymour Avenue in Cleveland, where the women were discovered. Cleveland police said Berry, DeJesus and Michelle Knight are alive, talking and appear to be OK.

“I heard screaming… And I see this girl going nuts trying to get outside,” said Charles, a neighbor who found the women. “I go on the porch and she said ‘Help me get out. I’ve been here a long time.’ I figure it was domestic violence dispute."
“She comes out with a little girl and says ‘Call 911, my name is Amanda Berry’… When she told me, it didn’t register.” He said he made the call and gave Berry the phone. When police arrived, officers asked him if he knew who he rescued.

A witness who spoke Spanish told NewsChannel5's Stephanie Ramirez that he helped break down the door. He said there was a child who was about 4 or 5 years old with Berry, as well as other children inside the house. He said he recognized Berry from posters.
Officers have a suspect in custody. There will be a media briefing Tuesday morning.

Berry was last seen in 2003 when she was called her sister to say she was getting a ride home from work at the Burger King on West 110th Street and Lorain Avenue. She was set to turn 17 the day after her disappearance. Her mother died of heart failure in 2006.
On April 2, 2004, 14-year-old DeJesus went missing while walking home from Wilbur Wright Middle School. She was last seen around West 105 Street and Lorain Avenue. Her mother, Nancy Ruiz, said she believed DeJesus was sold into human trafficking.
“I always said it from the beginning; she was sold to the highest bidder,” Ruiz said in April 2012.

The remaining families of both women went to MetroHealth Medical Center, where they will be reunited. FBI agents were also at the hospital Monday night as family and friends flocked to see the women.
"I am thankful that Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight have been found alive. We have many unanswered questions regarding this case and the investigation will be ongoing. Again, I am thankful that these three young ladies are found and alive," Mayor Frank Jackson said.

Last summer, there was a break in Berry case that turned out to be an inmate’s hoax. Robert Wolford, 26, told authorities that Berry’s body was in a vacant lot in Cleveland. Police searched at West 30th Street and Wade Avenue in July with backhoes, but nothing was found. Wolford was sentenced to four and half years in prison after pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice, making a false report and making a false alarm.

Scary as **** these things goes on. Some creep keeping girls locked up in his house, I assume as sex slaves.

Make me wonder how many other cases there are.

I'm confused, does it mention human trafficking?
I thought this was a case of abductions?

They were found a few miles from where they were abducted. I wonder did the police drop the ball on this one the same as they did with Jaycee Dugard?

Tens of thousands of people within 'a few miles'.

Cases like this seem to pop up surprisingly commonly. There was a girl found in California after 18 years,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kidnapping_of_Jaycee_Lee_Dugard a few years back, and there of course is that Austrian one from a year or two ago.

November 2004: Amanda's mother, Louwana Miller, appears on Montel Williams show with psychic Sylvia Browne. Browne tells Miller that Amanda is dead and she sees her "in water." Devastated, Miller is told she will see Amanda "on the other side, in Heaven."
I hope this bullshitting bitch is hung out to dry. I can't stand how they take advantage of people just looking for some kind of hope. Arseholes.

well this really is great news, but a mod should change the title to "girls missing for 10 years found & rescued in house in USA"

this is such a great story though :)

Berry's mother, Louwana Miller, died in 2006. Those close to her said the stress of her missing daughter took a toll on her health...

Yeah, I read that. It's so sad that she won't get to see her daughter again, and worse still because of that nut case probably presumed her to be dead.

Wasn't that the department of corrections, specifically the parole officers? It's a bit odd to be looking for someone to blame when his own neighbours never saw anything amiss.

    http://www.independent.ie/world-news/americas/three-women-abducted-a-decade-ago-found-alive-and-well-in-us-house-29247954.html
Three women who were abducted about a decade ago in the US have been found at a house in Cleveland.

It is believed they were tied up and kept captive in a basement of the property for the last 9-13 years.

Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight were found after a neighbour heard screaming and called 911.

Berry disappeared at age 16 on April 21, 2003, when she called her sister to say she was getting a lift home from her job at a Burger King. DeJesus went missing at age 14 on her way home from school about a year later.
Knight disappeared about 10 years ago when she was 21.

Children were also found at the property. Police have arrested a 52-year-old man and his two brothers in relation to the abductions.

Freaky, would make you wonder how many other people are being held captive that have gone missing!

That was my exact thought too when I heard this.

It could be happening in our own towns and cities.

Think of all the missing person cases in this country over the years.

    Chilling story.

What a good news story, hopefully in time these girls will get through this horrific ordeal. I wish them the best.
The men who are responsible for keeping these girls locked up will now know what it's like but not in the same way these girls endured.

In a bizarre twist it was also revealed kidnapper Castro's son Anthony, now 31, wrote a story about the disappearance of Amanda Berry in 2004 when he was journalism student.

    weird

I was thinking about that a when I read this on RTE this morning.

But it has been 10 years. They all presumed she was dead, grieved and moved on.

Particularly friends. I mean, they would have all graduated from school, gone off to college, and are spread out around the US or rest of the world even.

Her family could have been split up by this. The mother died from a broken heart and her siblings may have all gone their separate ways by now with lives of their own.

That poor girl has literally no life to speak of now. A decade is one hell of a hole to have to just skip over in your life. Not to mention the profound psychological issues they'll have from being held for so long and, as is almost universally the case with instances like these, the sexual abuse.

    :(

John McCarthy was shown footage of his mother on the news campaigning for his release once when about a year and a half into his captivity and then when he was finally released, four years later, his Dad met him but told him that his mother had died two years before.

Yet, nobody finds it strange that three people are supposedly locked up in an house, in what is a quite populated residential estate, for 10 years with nobody hearing, seeing or suspecting anything?

Icing on the cake, the main suspect he is a school bus driver: a 50-odd single man (divorced), living in an house that looks like a bunker with blocked out windows, doing a job that puts him in contact with children all the time...in today's hyper-worrying, ultra-suspicious world that would be much more than enough to have just about every pair of eyes in the neighbourhood trained on him 24/7, especially in a suburban, provincial area where people most likely spend a lot of time just nosing on their neighbours.

Then, after 10 years of perfectly covering their activities, the alleged kidnappers let it slip so gloriously that the three girls escape...sorry but I can't buy it at face value, there are too many things that don't quite fit in place. I hope a serious investigation takes place, there could be much more running behind the scenes and more people could be involved...and the three alleged victims should be questioned properly, rather than start a dollar-racking tour of each and every talk show on cable TV.

Are you suggesting they are somehow complicit in their disappearances? Even the girl who was a child of 13?

    That's a pretty big leap.

Yes, three unconnected girls/women taken at different times in different places signed up for a 10 year plan which would see them at best totally isolated from their friends and families, all for that sweet, sweet talk-show circuit money....

I think your tinfoil hat has slipped down and is blocking your air supply dude.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,420 ✭✭✭Lollipops23

This whole story is amazing, really hope the girls are able to have sense of normality in their lives from here on out.

Having said that, I'm concerned about the false hope this could give to other families out there with a missing loved one...

I think your tinfoil hat has slipped down and is blocking your air supply dude.

And who tells you they weren't actually trying to run from their "friends and families", and maybe ended up even worse?

Sure, go into the "tinfoil hat" jokes and ignore that the whole thing is strange. Let's just believe fact at face value and be happy, why not. Let's even bend reality and say the girls were abducted from different places, which they weren't (they disappeared from the same general location).

Investigation? What's the need for it, there's a big bad guy with his brothers to blame, and if there are other people involved (somebody close to the girls, maybe? It's often the case) who cares.

And an entire neighborhood that is apparently blind and deaf? Ah sure, it happens all the time. Even when a small child suddenly appears in the company of an aging man that lives in a shut-off house, or the neighbour hear screaming from an invisible woman. Woman that at some point gave birth as well, mind you, without anybody noticing anything.

Let's also ignore the fact that the girl calling 911 identified herself as the "girl that was all over the news", so she clearly had access to TV and news programs; And also ignore the fact she apparently said "kidnapped me and my daughter"; Daughter that clearly wasn't born yet when she was kidnapped.

Sure let's all be happy, and make silly tinfoil hat remarks at anybody that would be cautious before drawing any conclusions.

If this story was the plot for an upcoming movie script, I would say it wouldn't get next or near production stage.

The whole thing is quite unbelievable.

It will take many days, weeks, months for the whole story to come out.

The biggest question for me is how can someone go 10 years with 3 girls in his basement undetected.
