    Lads,

Whats the weight of an average bag of grass seed? And how much would you spread to the acre?

I have a lad quoting me seventy euro for an acre bag but the bag only weighs in at 11.5kg. I thought you would need around 14kg to the acre.

    thanks..

some places are 11.5, I have seen some 11kgs. currently using 12kg bags, I think I have had 12.5kgs bags in the past. Current sowing 12kgs bags costing ~ €75 - €80, Poor grass seed harvest and grain prices determine grass seed price

Thanks bob would the 12kg bag cover an acre or would you put in more?

12kg should be good enough. I've got away with half a bag per acre when sowing arable silage.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

How did it work out at half rate? I thought when under sowing that you need to increase grass seed rate and decrease the seed rate of the cover crop.

I be always wondering this to myself aswell. the packs I buy normally are 12.5kg or something and say acre packs. I wonder would there be any advantage in putting a bag and a quarter to a bag and a half to the acre. would you have a nicer thicker sward?

    Youre right there.

The reason I put up the question in the first place is because the lad selling the seed has "acre bags" at 11.5kg but on reading the brochure he gave me it recommends sowing at a rate of 14kg to the acre!

Is there a bit of messing goin on I wonder, or is it an honest oversight?

Worked grand, I did use extra clover and only about 4 stone of barley / acre. It was a wet summer so that probably helped.
