Giro d'Italia Stage 4 – May 7th Policastro - San Bruno 246k **Unmasked Spoilers**

I'll have a go at this stage thread making business!

    profile-04.jpg

Policastro Bussentino to Serra San Bruno, to give the full title.

This is the longest stage of the Giro, and the first to have a summit finish. That said, it is only a medium mountain stage, and 75% of it is flat. Expect the serious GC contenders to make themselves known on what will be doubtless a hard, hard day.

The first climb is essentially a warm-up for the second. It is 12 km at 5.5% avg, although parts of it get up to 10%, which will have to be taken at full gas. Anyone dropped from the lead group will have practically zero chance of getting back on. This stage won't tell us who will win the Giro, but it might tell us who won't.

    Thank you :)

Is there not Giro website? I loked for one on Google and couldn't find one.

Interesting news about Froome being Sky team leader in the Tour.

    You're welcome!

I don't think there's really an official one, strangely enough.

I think the gazetta website is basically as close as you'll get to an "official" page, quite reliable.

    http://www.gazzetta.it/Giroditalia/2013/en/

I personally prefer Steephill.tv though, it gives you links to handy videos from other sources like cyclingnews or eurosport or whatever. It's not very neatly presented but I find it gives me exactly what I'm looking for.

I had a look at both earlier. Its so hard to get a General Classification. Really frustrating.

I also looked at the UCI site and there was no mention of the Giro whatsoever! But there was a lovely pic of Pat McQuaid with a rep form the South African Cycling union so that was interesting..:D

A GC of the entire field? Yes, very hard to find indeed! Here's the top 20 though, best I can do without an intense googling session.

    <snip>

Mod note: the problem with starting tomorrow's thread today is there's more temptation to mention what happened today without using the required spoiler tags! - only today's stage thread can include such info without spoiler tags

    Thanks

This is the official Giro - Website !!!

The Giro was once founded to push the Gazzetta dello Sport.
Meanwhile the race is organized by an independent company, RCS Sport, that was started from Gazzetta dello Sport.
    ;)

I had a feeling i'd heard something like that before, but I'm still surprised there isn't a unique Giro d'Italia website like letour.fr.

    Let me give you advice
    http://www.gazzetta.it/Giroditalia/2013/classifiche/it/t_03_class.shtml?lang=it

Everyday you will find the results here first in Italian. At first the result of the stage (Tappa), then up to 30 min. - 45 min. after the race you will find all the results for all categories (except those with polls).
    1) Click first on the number for the stage
    2) Click on "Classifiche"
    3) Click on "Generali" to switch from the Stage results to the GC etc. of the race.

You will see, the site is not so bad.
The only problem is, that the search directly for Giro d'Italia for example with google, at the moment, will fail.

Please stick to the relevant day's threads - do not discuss today's stage in the thread covering tomorrow (or if you really must ensure you use spoiler tags before midnight)

I've just deleted one post after editing an earlier one to warn against this. Next time I'll be issuing a card and repeat offenders can expect a ban for the duration of the race

    Thanks

Long distance, with no intermediate sprints or KOM in the first half...

I've no clue what you are referring to. Is it just me?

This is a Giro thread. Surely we can discuss everything about the Giro in it?

On one side it was my fault. In one post I refered to the winner of stage 3 before midnight! (Look to the thread rules from Gavin)

eh this is a stage specific thread. which means its ok according to your own rules in the first post of the spoiling sticky you made.

The post that was made, referred to stage 3 results. There can't be any spoilers in here yet so it should be safe for people to open the thread.

Those 2 climbs at the finish really will point out GC contendors. Big day today, I'm sure quite a lot of contendors will want to perform well here.

I think we see a few GC wananbees get dropped in the finale today, maybe Cuddles, with Wiggo, Nibbles and Ryder to the fore.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,013 ✭✭✭Ole Rodrigo

My moneys on Nibbly, Wiggo and Cuddles - Ryder could have his work cut out in the last stretch.

Nibbly (of all people) crashed on a descent. He's catching up to the peloton now.

    Is this streaming anywhere?

No crash. Just a mechanical and wheel borrow from a team mate.

    Nibbly is infallible!

theres gonna be crashes galore on the descent...road is liek a river

    EDIT: what descent??

DiLuca, agonizingly looses out, cruel, in a nice way :pac:
Great win for Battaglin and his small team :)

Seems as though Wiggins has lost time here...BBC seem to be struggling to figure out where exactly this happened.

Allegedly there were gaps in the peleton, but I expect there is a good chance this is revised to (st) in the next 30 mins or so.

According to twitter - Wiggins lost 17 seconds . Now level on time with Hedjedal, three behind Nibali

Did anybody watch a live stream? Would be very interested to know if Wiggins ran out of puff or was held up for some other reason.

It was a flat finish pretty much, with a few corners in the finale, hard to see how he lost time unless he had a mechanical. I was watching it but there wasnt much to see.

it was a crash with salerno
    wiggo probably wasn't bothered

sky can appeal to the judge

    According to cycling news

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 394 ✭✭unichall

Eurosport.com reporting that he was held up by three riders who fell. It was inside the last 3k but only those who fell were given the same time. Id imagine there will be an appeal, how successful it will be is another thing

Wiggins will get 17 sec back in abut 2km of time trialling so dont think he wil be too bothered
