Is it possible, need to get a car to the NCT center. No tax either.

Yes. Contact your current insurance company or broker. Won't be cheap though.

Can't you get your local mechanic with garage insurance to take it for test on his trade plates? Be cheaper and lot less hassle than trying for one day cover.

I'm the local mechanic. Just want it sold, being outside Ireland the past 18 months, left in insured for the mother(her car) who was using it but didn't bother renewing 8 months ago. Don't even want to drive it as looking at selling it.

Do you know a family member or a friend with their own car? They could temp transfer their existing insurance over to the car for half a day or so and drive to and from the NCT centre for you. Some insurance companies will do a temp transfer for free while others charge an admin fee.

You can get a temp transfer if you have your own policy, usually is free, unless you're deemed a risk i.e under 25 or lets say maybe on a 3L+. If not then you might be able to get someone you know to temp trasfer across from their policy to drive it to the NCT for you. Tax would be the issue, but If it was me I'd definitely take the risk as long as you don't leave it parked anywhere in public(traffic warden issue tax fines for non display). In the unlikelyhood you are stopped between your house and the NCT centre, a Guard would probably leave you away with it if you explained the situation.

Yeah I missed the no tax bit. Sounds like the easiest way is to either get it towed or brought on a flat bed.

Yeah I'm an idiot, I'll just get a tow rope.

You cant tow an uninsured car, can you? Unless I am mistaken (and its possible that I am) a car being towed is still deemed to be in use on a public road and as such must have up to date tax, NCT and valid insurance.

I think it's illegal to use a rope to tow these days too.
