If you're over 5'5" ish then I'd reckon go for a 29er. I've a trail bike 26er 140mm dual suspenson (very nice carbon job) but the 29er hard tail covers the same ground (a little slower downhill/faster up) with just 80mm suspension, the front wheel just goes where you point it in comparison with a long travel 26er which is a game chance. You also don't need a load of gears, pick your hill/loop, put on a 22,24,26,28,30 granny ring up front to suit and 9 gears on the back, anything more gravity should help.

I have a for sale advert on boards under the heading "FS - Felt Q220 hard tail mountain bike", for €300. Excellent bike, in great condition, worth a look.
