Not anytime soon, probably never. Samsung have to first port the version to work on the handset and then the carriers get hold of it, adding their junk apps and backgrounds, etc., and then they push it out. Some carriers are faster than others but it's also a case of which regions Samsung first ports the firmware for first. For example, Poland got the first Jelly Bean (4.1.x) release from Samsung.

Samsung are slow, they won't make a 4.2.2 because it'll be long obsolete by the time they're done. The S III is likely to receive the next release, down the line, but don't expect it until later this year at the very least. The only way to get the latest Android onto the S III is to root it and flash a custom firmware (such as CyanogenMod, etc.).

I doubt they'll bother doing the S II or other phones that they released in 2011.

Vanilla release from Samsung for the SGS III is meant to become available this month or early next month, if your waiting on Meteor to give it to you though you'll be waiting a long time, they have to take the vanilla release and get their ROM maker to tweak it for Meteor and add their junkware to it. Generally I found Meteor to be useless for Android updates but you will be able to get the vanilla Samsung version and flash it yourself bypassing the wait for Meteor to do it.

I didn't realize they'd bother with 4.2.2 since it's about to be obsoleted very soon, and that must've been known for quite a while now. They were less quick with creating a vanilla 4.1.

Whatever the case, waiting for the carriers adds a significant chunk of time and anxiety!

4.1 recently came out on the S2 so I'm sure Samsung won't forget about the S3, they are one of the better manufacturers in that regard.

Samsung are still not brilliant. It goes to show just how bad the rest are and that the only way to be "cutting-edge" is to get a Nexus or to flash a custom firmware.

They left the original S behind some time ago, the latest firmware is Gingerbread. We weren't even treated to an Ice Cream Sandwich. That's one of a number of reasons why I kept flashing a new firmware to my S every few weeks. Another big reason is because the custom firmwares were faster and on a phone as old as the S, you do notice every hiccup that you're spared on a fast and efficient custom firmware compared to the stock.

They're not brilliant by any stretch, but aside from Google I think they are the best, and I certainly expect the S3 to get 4.2 and also 4.3 or whatever it is we find out about in 10 days.

I reckon they'll skip 4.2 because of the imminent update to be announced this month at I/O, with a quick subsequent source release.

What they'll probably do is cease development of 4.2, if they have already started, and move on to 4.3, which is what the rumor mill suggests will be the next release (another Jelly Bean) as some website logs have uncovered access from Jxxxxx 4.3, as specified by the browser's user agent. Though, until we get the final word, we cannot know for sure what's to come.

I could be wrong but I don't think they would waste their time going to 4.2 at this point unless they have builds almost ready to go within the next month or so.

Is 4.3 coming out in a few days? It will be nice to see on the S4 ;)

The only thing stopping me from flashing my phone is I will loose sky go which I use an awful lot....

    Ah decisions :o

It looks like it will be 4.3 but we'll have to wait and see what happens at the I/O keynote.

The S4 won't get it for a while, though, later this year at the very earliest. Same happened with the S III. When it came out, 4.1 was imminent but it continued to run 4.0 until October or later, depending on the carrier. Some carriers in other parts of the world, like Australia, didn't update their S III phones until even later.

Is the S3 carrier branded by Meteor?

Just asking as I have the Note 2 from them and that's unbranded unlocked out of the box i.e. its the international version. I get updates whenever Samsung releases them, no dependency on Meteor.

As far as I can see, Samsung are usually the first manufacturer to release new Android versions excluding the Nexus phones. Sure if you're a flashaholic and want to have the latest android first for a guaranteed 2 years (from phone release date) then your best bet is the latest Nexus.

At least Samsung are better with their Android released than HTC

Oh yeah meant to say. According to Sammobile both the S3 and Note 2 should be getting 4.2 in May/June

Meteor never branded any of my Android phones at all. Out of the box CID is HTC_001 (for example). The update to Jelly Bean (4.1 in my case) came this week at the same time as the rest of Europe.

Use a CID getter app and check your CID.

Samsung have said they're skipping 4.2.2 and going straight to 4.3. Which will most likely be out before year end. As regards waiting for meteor don't hold your breath or waste your time.

Could always go the custom rom road and get the latest, moreso stock android and leave touchwiz behind.

I've considered using a custom rom, but the thougts of loosing sky go are too much for me... I use it too often when smallie wants to watch peppa pig!

Best reason (and only) I can come up with!

Dual boot then. Bit more work involved but worth a look if you're itching to update.
