Whats the exact model of your laptop? Is it powering on?

its a pavilion dv6, powers on but goes to a black screen and says 'a disk read error occurred' i had it assessed and was told that the constant overheating of the fan(it used to overheat and shut off) blew the motherboard

Just sounds like the hard drive needs to be replaced or the hard drive has become loose. you wouldn't receive this error if the motherboard blew. Who told you the motherboarrd has to be replaced? If it was a shop there trying to rip you off

As the last person said, if the motherboard was gone you'd get absolutely nothing on screen. Try a replacement hard drive, hard drives are very easy to replace. If you were told that by a computer technician, make sure you get a second opinion.

I agree, sounds like the hard disk rather then the board.
    Try this
    http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows

If you have a memory stick you can boot off it, will establish whether rest of hardware is ok. May also let you recover data from drive onto alternate media.

Thank you for all replies.. The post about the usb, i cant actually get into the laptop, cant get past the black screen so wouldnt be able to do this?? and i didnt know that if the motherboard was gone id get nothing on screen so thats good to know thanks, and yes i was told by someone who works with computers that the motherboard was gone, because of the constant overheating of the fan, i kept meaning to get the fan replaced but never got around to it then this happened-wont boot up properly etc

I will be getting a second opinion this week

Overheating will damage a motherboard over time, but can be easily rectified - by cleaning dust out of the air vents and fan. Any PC technician should be able to do this for you, if you dont want to do it yourself. If you want to try the USB idea, you should be able to boot to USB by changing the boot device in the BIOS (which you should be able to get into on the HP screen that appears before the disk error screen). Good luck with getting it fixed, post again if you need any more advice or help :)

You need to create a live cd which bypasses the black screen error as it will be booting from USB not the hard drive and you don't need to go into windows to do this(need a different PC to make it though). Heres how to create a live usb to make sure your motherboard is okay http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-ubuntu

also you don't need new fans, all you need is to clean the dust out of them more than likely, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VMqrudLhJA
It will also show you how to make sure the hard drive is properly connected and secure and also how to replace it.

If you get a shop to clean the fans its around 70 euro, new hard-drive 90 euro, reinstall windows 50 euro. Your looking at 200 and probably be better off just to buy a new one like this http://www.pcworld.ie/Product/ACER-Aspire-E1571-156andquot-Laptop/314590/301?utm_source=PCWorld&utm_medium=HomepageBanner3&utm_campaign=AcerLaptop&utm_term=Acer+Laptop&utm_content=Banner3

If you go for linux instead of Windows, you can slice €50 out of the above bill.
