    Hi guys,
My son is looking to upgrade his camera.
Current one is a Canon 450d,

Funds are scarce so it will be a used model.

He was looking at some 5d Mk1's but spotted a couple of 1D Mk2 bodies around.

He will be keeping his 50mm lens to have as a start.

Any advice on which he should go for?

anyone on here selling a body reasonable?

    Thanks

Bit of a difference between 5d and 1d so it depends on what he likes to shoot. If it's sport, wildlife where the cropped sensor, speed and durability is king, then the 1d.
For everything else go for a 5d. The 5d is full frame with very good ISO handling and when he does get to add some new lenses, especially wide angle, thats when the 5d comes into his own.

    Ah,
I thought the 1D was full frame as well.

Only the newest 1D X is full frame as far as I know. I say the 5d is the better option, it's the camera I'm considering upgrading to.

1Ds mk1/2/3 are all full frame!

Might also be worth your time looking at second hand 50d and 60d range of cameras which sit in between the 450d and 5d range. Had a 50d for a while and it was a really nice camera.

Also as a 2nd option have you thought about getting a lens instead of a new body?

    Sorry,
I should have said he wants to go full frame.

I'd go for the 5Dmk1, after that look at saving to get some nice glass

Just curious as to why he feels the need to go full frame.... why/what does he feel his 450D is lacking?

Maybe he feels like it's lacking some of the benefits of full frame cameras....

I am not 100% sure why he wants to change to full frame.
Possibly he feels he is missing out on what full frame might have to offer?

Would he be just as well to get a decent lens or two for the 450d ?

I presume he is into portraits, and video recording is not required. If so, then a used 5d mk1 for around 450 euro on Adverts.ie would be a real treat in my opinion.

Nothing wrong with the 450d by the way, but the 5d is a step up in terms of image quality, low noise, dynamic range etc.. and of course the bokehliciousness of Full Frame close-up portraits.

    Hi.
Actually it is mostly Car shoots he does.
He is looking at covering some drift days and other motor sports days.

If he did buy 5d, would his current 50mm lens be suitable on it?
he was also looking at a sigma 70-300 today.

Canons full frame cameras can take all EF lenses but not EFS lenses.

Either way, I didn't realize he was into sports etc. A really fast continuous burst shooting mode should be a priority, so maybe something like a 7d or 1d mk3, even a used 50d.

Burst shooting is rarely essential for drift days, you'll only end up with a few thousand photos to look through at the end of the day. Learning panning is much better, and cheaper! Having quick focusing is much more important.
