Building a server

So I know the great benifits of building your own PC instead of buying a dell or other prebuilt one(thanks solely to this forum).
But my question is, is there the same financial and sense of self achievement from building a server/NAS instead of buying one such as this or this.
Also is one of these much better than the other and if so why?
    Thanks in advance.

I had this debate myself earlier this year. I chose to go the custom route. I've got a cheap-as-chips setup (H61, G550, etc.) with a few HDDs, running in JBOD. I prefer this solution because it allows me to add more than two hard drives to the whole setup. As it is, I've got five hard drives in the thing, and to get a 5/6-bay NAS like the ones above, I'd be looking at at least €7-800. I got my setup for less than €300.

I was going to say that I resent this, but now you mention it... I was actually going to stick a H60 on it... (planning an overhaul for the Summer)

There are a bunch of custom options. If you're not thinking of RAID, and just doing straight backups (JBOD-style, like mine currently is) then you can just use cheap parts, and PCIE SATA cards.

If you're thinking of RAID, you could get a dedicated card (few hundred) for performance, or ZFS, if you don't want a dedicated card (this uses your system's hardware. It's more intensive - obviously - than a dedicated card, but gives you the flexibility to just replace a CPU/RAM, etc. if something fails). There's also the option of something like FlexRAID/unRAID, which is what I'll be using for my overhaul. Similar to ZFS, but it also gives you the option of snapshot RAID. You get all the space saving advantages of RAID, but don't need the crazy hardware requirements of ZFS, as you'd only be backing up once a day. You lose the real-time backup/sustainability of "real" RAID, but otherwise it's win-win.

//incoherent rant. Apologies if it made no sense.
