Dell Vostro 14"

Bought a new Dell Vostro 14" (i3 3rd gen) online via Dell.ie and it arrived early this week. First day just started it and put in the locale etc as requested by Dell. Next day hit the start button but no start, lights or noise. Spent the better part of half a day on the phone with tech support running tests. No joy.

Next day service tech arrives with a motherboard. He starts to dismantle computer and it occurs to me to ask if the motherboard is new. Eh, no he says, it is refurbished. I stop the repair job there and then and he makes a call and informs me that Dell will call later that day. No call comes through.

Anyway have now asked for Dell to pick it up and my money returned. Money will not be returned untill 10 days after they receive laptop.

    My Questions are.

1/ Has the quality of laptops deteriorated in last few years?

2/ Has Dell laptops in particular deteriorated?

Why did you just not return it at the start?

As for you questions, why do you want to know the answer to either of these? After you've bought one.

    Imo

    (1) Laptops are churned out like confetti and yes they have deteriorated.

    (2) Dell have significantly fallen from the top.

Depends what you are comparing it with. Vostro is a low end budget (affordable) model.

I don't remember Dell ever being the best Laptop brand, Apple and IBM were almost always higher in the satisfaction surveys. Even going back in the 90's. But Dell were usually somewhere in the middle.

DOA (dead on arrival) is a fact of live with mass produced products. 10 yrs ago I was on a project were we rolled out about 2000 laptops across a large company we had about 5% DOA.

I've used various dell latitudes from different eras and their quality has been consistently good. The budget ranges for most manufacturers have gone downhill, though I expect some corners to be cut when you get an i3 laptop for sub €400
