Job offer but forgot to mention pre-booked holiday

Someone close to me did an interview this week and got a call late this evening to say he got the job. Absolutely delighted to say the least but is a bit concerned about a non-refundable holiday that was booked months ago. They didn't ask him about holidays during the interview. The HR manager rang late this afternoon offering him the job and he was so delighted that he forgot to mention it. He tried ringing her back within the hour but she had left the office. He is calling up to them after the weekend to sort out his contract/starting date etc. He plans to ring HR first hing Tuesday morning to tell them. Should he be worried ??

Well he should definitely discuss it with them. Maybe they'd let him start a week or two later. You'll never know unless you ask. But if its a deal breaker I'd just let the holiday slide. Holidays will come again... but a job offer might not.

Any reasonable HR Manager would understand. If it was a big deal that they unequivocally needed someone to start on a specified date; they would have been sure to impress that upon you.

Ring them up and chat to them about it. If they aren't accommodating, well then, just go on holidays and enjoy yourself. You will have the rest of your life to look for another job.

Thanks for the input folks, he is going to ring them first thing tuesday morning. I reckon he will be fine, he hasn't even discussed starting dates yet. Heres hoping

Quick update, he rang Head of HR this morning and there is no problem honouring his holiday. Obviously they would prefer if he wasn't going but they will just re-arrange things to suit. Very nice about it they were too !
