Just generally curious what people consider a high salary. People bandy about the 100k mark as being high or very high.

Now I am not talking about household income just annual salary

    What would a German say?

A 100k is fùckin' massive in my eyes.

I would consider making 60k a year basic salary or over as being "high"

A euro more than the wife can spend.

Average Irish annual income is just over 40k, so I'd say that someone claiming 60k is high and 90k+ as very high to be right on the money.

As a German, most German would regard an income of around or over €3000 a month as high.

I didn't think the average was that high. Also averages are not exactly a good gauge IMHO.

It's all relative. 60k for me alone would be massive money. Not people with kids though obviously.

Didn't put €25000 down, would be high for me.

    I make less than 10k a year.

30k + would be massive for me! But I suppose it all depends on what your circumstances are. Are you married? Kids? 2 cars/big car? Mortgage or Apartment?

    etc.

    that sounds wrong - 40K average - I don't think so.

Depends on whether you are actually earning the figure. Too many people are getting without earning...hence the sh1te the country is in.:(

That is apparently less than the median and average

It is pretty odd that an average wage amount would be considered high

Well, I earn 4000 euro a week and I have to eat a cornflake box for dinner once a week. The other days I eat cornflakes.

40 k is only a average for the public sector.

Last time I checked 36k p.a was the average Irish salary. I Stand to be corrected though as that was awhile ago

Voted 60k, that be near double what i am on. So I would class that as a massive wage, Hell I could have voted 50k.

You forget that the average tax rate in Germany is just under 50%, in some cases higher.

I would have to say when I think high salary I would think of earning 100k or more. The fact you only take home around 60k when earning 100k also takes the gloss off it too. For a single person its high but if its the only income to a family its not really high any more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,808 ✭✭✭FatherLen

I am only 25 so anything above 20,000 is more than enough for me to live on so i consider maybe 40 grand to be high. for someone with kids and a mortgage and all that icky stuff i presume they would think higher.

Maybe, but not everyone in the public sector is well paid. There are a lot of people in the public sector on 25k-35k p.a (clerical people) its the top dogs that earn the money in the public sector. And in my honest opinion, nurses and teachers dont get paid nearly enough over here.

PS I work in the private sector

I would guess he meant 3000 after tax, as 3000 before tax is about average and not a high wage in Germany.

You do realise they would only get about 50% of the amount they earn above you so it doesn't work out as double your take home pay?

I'm 23 and on 28k, which is more than enough to cover my cost of living (may change when I get a car). It's high enough for me at present anyway! Of course, more is always better :P

Things are relative to the economy of the nation, sombody in Bangladesh for example would consider our dole money a lotto win.
The average industrial wage is around 32k, so in my opinion sombody on 65k, double the average industrial wage is on a high salary. A salary of above 100k and I'd class you as wealthy.

I would consider 60k p.a. to be a high salary but I'd say it depends on ones qualifications/work experience/personal living environment/etc. as well... bearing in mind 60k would give you a net pay around 33k here (after tax and contribution to social security "insurances")...

They only work 25 hours a week not to mention all their holidays.

i'd class 100k as a high salary giving most workers earn between 25k and 60k (non graduates and graduates)

60 - 100k is obviously a good salary but achievable with education and hard graft,

so 100k + is high to me, only certain jobs will ever pay that much.

Surprisingly, we are also subject to taxes. The tax the government refer to as "income tax" is relatively low, but they have introduced new taxes on income and increased others. Also, most utilities are heavily taxed here. There was also a carbon levy introduced in 2010 that we pay in addition to VAT and excise on fuels (except solid fuels).

We also pay massive amounts of tax on "luxury items" like cigarettes and alcohol. The reality is that if you smoke 20-a-day and have a few pints on the weekend, as well as commuting on public transport, owning a car for weekends/trips to the shops, paying a mortgage and all the associated charges that go with house ownership, about 90+% of your income goes to the exchequer.

Then the government spend it by arguing about how to spend it and borrow money for the things that we actually need.

You're right actually, seems it'd be closer to 35k or maybe a bit less. I'd still consider 60k to be the beginning of "high" for the sake of giving an answer and 90k+ to be very high. Lots of other factors come into play though, what's the job, how many hours are worked, conditions etc etc...

I have to laugh at those saying 60k is a high salary.

A salary of 25k gives you a net income of 21k after tax. You pay just over 4k in tak

A salary of 45k gives you a net income of 32k after tax, you pay just over 13k in tax.

A salary of 60k gives you a net income of 39k after tax so you pay just over 21k in tax.

And some one on 900K a year is very very very high.
9 million a year is very very very very very very high.

These are all working class wages. A butler probably got the equivalent in the 19th century ( in terms of his relative position in society) as 90K today, but would see himself as poor. Or not rich.

Not only is the 60K in real terms just about twice the 25K figure ( less), another way to look at it is what people can afford in a mortgage. The standard mortgage for someone on 65K is about 200K these days, rich my bollocks. ( ask yourself who is buying the more expensive houses? Houses from twice to 10 times as much) The real rich spend these after tax salaries in a day, on food, or gambling, or just living. The real rich hire people on 90K.

Very few people on wages are rich ( CEOS get most pay in options, or capital gains, or dividends). And very few rich people earn most of their income in wages. In the US the top .1% earn about 5% of their income in wages, but they get about 20% of all income.
