pins on replacement fans for HP ML150?

I have a HP ML150 that makes an awful racket thanks to monstrously loud server fans, so i decided to replace them with some nice silent fans, but i've run into a bit of a snag with the connectors.

originally, there were only the two old fans in it (none on the CPU heatsinks) one at the back and one at the front, both connected to 6 pin headers on the motherboard.

the old fans have this 6 pin connector which is exactly the same size as two of the regular 3 pin fan connectors side by side (and indeed 2x 3pin connectors do fit perfectly onto the connector on the mobo).

    unfortunately, they don't work. :(

only 4 wires (the middle 4 of the 6) are connected to the 6 pin connector, but all 3 wires on my new fans are black, but i suspect that the colours wouldn't match up even if they weren't. :(

any thoughts on a way to get these working without the mobo throwing a hissy fit? i tried just using the supplied molex connectors, but the bios (predictably) just shuts the server down with no sysem fans connected to the mobo.

Well its easy to find out what each wire on the 3 pin does

    But I can't find a diagram for the 6 pin connector :(

here's the connection on the motherboard for one of the fans, but i don't think it'll make any difference. i was hoping it might have some kind of identifying marks around it, but apparently not. :(

i did find this 2 fan unit with the same connector on it, but i don't know if that's going to help me decipher what each connection does in relation to a normal fan.
