So I've got a f*ck ton of college work to get done over the next few days and have been burning the candles at both ends. Unfortunately, as a result I've had a cold the last two days and can now feel the onset of the flu. I can't afford to stop working unfortunately, so I'm wondering if the wise and beautiful people of AH can recommend any drinks, medications, foods or outright voodoo magic to slow down the onset of this flu? Thanks! :(

If you're a guy, get a doctors note and ask for an extension (who knows, you may not even pull through)

If you're a woman quit your complaining and get it done ffs

What about those lemsip drinks? I've never used them so I don't know if they're effective or not, but you could give those a try.

I can't really remember the last time I took lemsip, but I heard that it makes you drowsy, which wouldn't be good. Is there anything like a non-drowsy version do you know?

P.S. Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Also seeing as I'll probably be getting dinner soon, is there any magical super foods I should be eating?

Keep your workspace and your hands clean. Drink lots of water and, even though you might not have an appetite, eat. Visit your chemist and ask for some advice.

What flavour advice ? lemon or blackcurrant ?

OP destroy your house ,make it look like it was burgled , give yourself a punch in the face and combining this with your flu ask for an extension saying your laptop etc was stolen.

Lemsips with a spoonful of honey stirred in. In the long term you could try taking probiotics in capsules or yoghurts. Wouldn't do any harm to take something like Pharmaton capsules for a few months either if you're feeling a bit run down.

Echinacea capsules, you can get them in chemists. Meant to boost your immune system. I've used them before if I felt something coming on. Might be worth a try. Also, drink lots of water and try and get as much sleep as possible, it's the best cure for anything!

    It's not a fecking flu, it's a cold.
Eat tonnes of garlic, it'll sort it out and prevent any social interactions too - win-win.

Nowt like Actifed for the snotty nose...it's the biz but can make you sleepy...dries and unblocks the nose..take paracetamol too...great for the achy pain and crappy feeling.

At the first sign of a cold Vicks 1st Defence works but it's too late now your dose is well established.

    Step 1: Get a glass.
Step 2: Pour 100mls of Hot Whiskey into said glass.
Step 3: Get the juice of a Lime and pour it into the whiskey.
Step 4: Grind up some chilli flakes and mix.
Step 5: Add a hint of pepper.
Step 6: Assuming you added the pepper you should then throw out that horrible concoction of doom and don't trust anyone in this room.

Eat plenty of protein foods (healing)
Drink plenty of fluids (not red bull, drink water and some 7up or juices)
Allen's Pine and honey balsam (I think it's called) cough bottle is the work of the devil, smells like death, contains chloroform, but definitely works for sore throat and mucous and clears your head too
    Prioritise sleep
Fresh ginger and garlic and plenty of veg and you'll be grand

Not leaving all the work until the last week.

OP open up a document in Word and then save it.

Open it in notepad and delete a random batch of code that's their and then save and rename that with your project name.

When the lecturer goes to correct it, it'll come up with an error screen, when the lecturer informs you of this do apologise and promptly send on your finished work.

Should buy you a day or two at the least if you're really out of options.

Not saying that'll cure ya, but I'd love to know what happens.

OptiMen multivits from ON are the best imo. Whenever I'm on them I don't get run down at all, whenever I'm off them and training I often get run down and sickly.

Oh yeah and crap loads of water. 3 litres a day is ideal.

    Doesn't work.

6 x 1000mg tablets of vitamin C will kill the cold if you take them all at once

A lot of lecturers know about this.

If you are going to do this, just saying, make sure that there is some substantial content in the doc. A doc 2 bytes in size will obviously be empty.

    My advice re: flu.
Strepsils (not the cheapest variety that are just like sweets, but the more expensive ones).
Mouthwash (the stronger the better, make sure to gargle).
If caught early enough, those nasal sprays for killing infection.
    Hot drinks.

Vitamin C technically won't kill anything, but a good supply of vits + minerals in general is a pretty good means of fighting infection. Know people who swear by zinc tablets. Plenty of food too helps (energy).

It really does. And get the high grade stuff if you're really serious.

My tried and tested method of getting rid of colds will work OP, it tastes like hell but that's what you need to rid yourself of demons.

    GINGER TEA

Boil the kettle. Meanwhile, cut about two inches of root into 1 Euro coin sizes. When the kettle is boiled you can do 1 of two things (depending how soon you want rid of your cold)

    - Put the boiling water onto your cooker, add the ginger and continue to boil, on a low heat for about 20+ minutes. Until the water is brown(er). Drink that. Do this at least 3 times in one day. Your cold will be gone.

    - Put the ginger into a large flask/cup with the boiling water. Leave to sit overnight (8-10hrs). Drink the following day.

Trust me, either of these processes will rid you of your cold. The ginger tea tastes putrid, its spicy, stings your throat and warms your soul...three essential ingredients for good health. It's been a cold remedy for 1000's of years in the middle east.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,426 ✭✭✭ressem

    The usual for a cold.

    1. Don't sniff back a running nose. It increases your viral load. Use a box of tissues and wash your hands and face frequently.

    2. Cut down on milk, cheese and sugar for the couple of days. Mucus isn't as cloying.

    3. Drinking hot water, tea, coffee to wash out your mouth and throat.

Going mad on vitamin C tablets does nothing. Everything over the daily allowance gets flushed.

eh I wouldn't be recommending that. I know in my college, my department operates a zero tolerance policy, so if that happens, you get zero. Even if it was a genuine mistake.

OP a good night's sleep is definitely the best thing in my experience, I know you're short for time but try and schedule in a somewhat decent amount of sleep.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 2,196 ✭✭✭the culture of deference

Have a good night's sleep. Take breaks during the day and get out for a walk.

Most people get sick from touching around the eye's,

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Most experts believe that flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. Less often, a person might also get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose.

eat well, and by well I dont mean lots.
healthy food basically, veg and fruits  veg soup not the in a cup ****e
rest sleep, take to the bed and rest while studying and go to bed early.

but it sounds like you will be studying like mad into the wee hours, living on caffiene and abusing your body in general, so my advice is null and void and doing all that will make it alot worse

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,789 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

    Doesn't work.
I've always found vitC does work. Your body needs it to fight colds.

Sleep will probably make a big difference if you're not getting it. If you're overworking yourself you probably don't have a cold, and colds don't develop into flues. That's like saying a cut on your finger will develop into a severed leg.

Get sleep, spending every hour studying won't help you remember anything. In the UK they've done tests that show and hour of learning, followed by half an hour of physical activity followed by half an hour of revision of what you learned earlier will help the information stick in your head. It will also help you tire and get the sleep you need to remember what you've learned in the day.

Sleep is an important part of the process, just like with physical training the body does much of it's changes during rest.
