Just walk, there's a lovely walkway all the way there, it only takes about 15mins.

I can't see that gate into carton house being open during the irish open. That's only a gate for walkers that leads directly onto the monty course where the open is taking place. Can't see it being open because they won't want to be letting people in for free!

probably true, in which case the canal might be the best walk

there's a shuttle bus running from Maynooth, Celbridge and Leixlip.
    see it here for yourself.
    http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2013/tournamentid=2013050/news/newsid=194011.html

about two thirds the way down the page it says:

Among the plans for the three towns are:

    · The inclusion of a simple guide to golf in a locally produced brochure is intended to help newcomers to understand the basic rules of golf as a sport.

    · A shuttle service between the towns and the event to allow easy access to the venue throughout the days of the competition, partly because of the proximity of the population to the venue, but also to limit the inconvenience of significant traffic associated with such an event.
