I want to send my CV to a company that have not advertised a job but for them to keep it on record. Normally my cover letter would start with " I am responding to the advert for such a job as seen in.....". What should I start it with when there was no advert. Also Im looking for any kind of work within this company. How do I say that without sounding desperate??

Don't agree. No cover letter and CV is guaranteed to end up in the bin.

OP, make sure the letter is addressed to a specific person, eg HR manager Mr/Ms X Y. Ask them to keep you in mind for Z position, should it become vacant in the near future. Explain briefly why they should consider you. Good Luck

I would start it with something about how you have researched the company, noted the great service they provide/ work they do and are interested in being a part of it. Briefly mention the variety of skills you have and refer to certain experience on your CV that are appropriate for the positions they would have. Well done on your forward thinking!

If I'm emailing my CV to someone, do I attach the cover letter as a separate attachment or have it like the first page of the CV, so to speak?

The email is the cover letter. A cover letter is just to introduce yourself. Most of the time it isn't given to the person who actually reviews the CV.

    +1

Assuming that you are emailing the CV, then the body of the email itself will serve this purpose. Keep it crisp and to the point.

There is no need whatsoever for a seperate cover letter, this has become redundant with the advent of email.

No hiring manager is ever going to take this seriously, and it just sounds sycophantic.

in all my job applications I have sent C.V. and cover letter by email. The email just states what the two attachments are. I find a cover letter best sent as a seperate attachment as it contains better formatting.

I always send the cover letter as the email and attach only the CV. Its true it doesnt format well when copied and pasted but you just gotta spend some time making it look presentable.
