Peugeot 307 locking wheel nut

Left my car about 6 months ago in for wheel alignment, tracking and a new tyre. All was good, but recently sent the car to be serviced and having new break discs fitted.

The mechanic informs me that the above is missing and its very hard to get the wheel off. Now I definately changed the tyre before myself, would the wheel alignment crowd have needed to use the locking wheel nut?

If so they never put it back in the boot with the spare wheel.

Is it possible to buy another locking wheel nut for a 307?

you get two keys so even if they lost one you should have the other somewhere.

I'm not sure about the replacement key but hopefully you won't have the problem I had in that the key was ineffective cause they used the gun on it. see attached.

a guy welded that nut on and off it came. No amount of beating and heating the nut could shift it. I bought a set of replacement lugs for less than €30 and now have no lock nut on any wheel.

The mechanic is going to drill the centre and apply a freezing spray to try and shrink the nut in order to get it off. We will see what happens.

No sign of the key to be honest, rang the place that last changed my tyre they say standard procedure is to return it to the boot or glovebox, never changed the tyres since and its not there now so it went amiss somewhere.

stupid question, but is a lock nut absolutely essential ? or can you just nut the wheel extremely tight with your wrench

A replacement locknut key can be got from a main dealer ordered from you vin (chassis) number....Think they work out around €60-70 and take around a week to come from france....:(
I'd remove all four and replace with regular studs....not so many robbing alloys anymore they just take the whole car...
You could also use a kit like this... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/US-PRO-7-Piece-Wheel-Lock-nut-Removal-Tool-Set-Locking-Nut-Remover-Twist-Sockets-/261119236608?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item3ccbeb5a00

The reason for using a lock nut is purely to make it harder for someone to steal your wheels.
