    2012 Audi A4 VARIANT: 2.0tdi 143bhp s-line automatic

Main VW Dealer Asking €34,950. 16,900m.

Opinions welcome here. Are there any known issues with this model? Mileage is very low and I'm thinking of this as an alternative to a new VW Golf 7 2.0 TDI DSG.

Any objective and sensible advice welcomed. Is the asking price realistic or wide of the mark? It is an auto and seems well-spec'd.

    SPECIFICATION INCLUDES:

s-line exterior, s-line sport seats, bluetooth, multi function steering wheel, 18 inch 5 spoke alloys, led lights Metallic paint, CD player, Parking sensors, Satellite navigation, Front fog lights, Central locking, Immobiliser, Driver airbag, Passenger airbag, Multiple airbags, Isofix, Power steering, Traction control, Air conditioning, Alloys, ABS

Audi's multitronic is crap, so might be worth checking out which auto box it has. VW's DSG is excellent on the other hand.

Sounds like a pretty decent price, and a very good specification. New retail price at the moment is €43,210 so it's a fair chunk off that - and a new one doesn't have the built in NAV.

5 Spoke wheels suggests to me that it's the pre-facelift model (standard on S-Line post facelift were twin spoke wheels, but think 5 spoke were still an option), but there isn't really much difference between them. Minor cosmetic changes and the older style DRL's.

No real issues with the engine, and we've a good few A4 143ps multitronics on fleet and I don't think any have had gearbox issues so far. Engine seems to be reliable too - had problems with the keys on early A4's, and DMF's eventually go on the manual's.

My biggest issue with the Multitronic box is that it's slow to respond to throttle input - escpecially from a standstill. Feels like it takes ages between putting your foot down and the car starting to move. Probably only a split second, but feels much worse than the DSG or even the BMW steptronic box. I'm also not a fan of how CVT boxes go about getting the power to the road, but that could just be me.

I've sent them an email to see which auto box the car has.

Audi's DSG box is called S-Tronic, rare enough to find one in an A4 here. Those Multitronics can give problems too.

Seems expensive to me for an A4 when you can buy this 2012 520d auto for similar money:

I'll save you the long, agonising, wait. It's the Multitronic. S-Tronic is only just available with the 2.0Tdi 177 this year (quattro), and based on the long wait for an A5 with that combo, they don't start production until week 21.

Hopefully the S-Tronic box will filter down to the other engines and replace the multitronic, but up till now it's only ever been a 2.0Tdi Multitronic.

Thanks R.O.R. - Dream over.... Multitronic not for me, thanks. The Golf DSG is still in the equation. Great place, this for good advice :)

BTW, the dealer emailed me the info in about 10 mins. so kudos to them for that anyway.

I have one, an 09 model. The multitronic box is fine once you keep on top of the servicing. Far nicer to drive than a passat IMHO (my brothers got a 2011 auto Passat)
