Black license plates

Earlier on today I saw a 2001 BMW Z4 with black plates and white writing on them. Is this legal? I've never seen it before and a quick search just referred to old cars which had black plates.

actually it can be legal if the plates are on a vehicle belonging to the defence forces

Could there be a clause where it's legal if the person who owned the car was in the defense forces?

It's also acceptable on vintage plates in the old alphanumeric system. But post 1987 plates no

More than likely not legal. Most DF staff cars are black Mondoes anyway

It's legal for vintage/classic cars but other than that no.

black plates are used by the defence forces on Transit mini-buses so that the reflective plates don't give their position away in a battle situation :-)

Ah. I saw one yesterday on Newlands Cross. Front plate was black but the rear was white. Thought it was a Garda Mondeo when I first saw it but it didn't have any of the usual extras.

My first car (bought in 1999) was a red 94' Ford escort.

First thing I did was put black plates on it.

There seems to be very little law enforcement on using the correct legal number plates in Ireland - so many different styles out there now, it's unbelievable.

I must be the only one who notices one guy in the jeep with no passengers using the bus lane so!

I'm joining the black plate brigade today anyway so no doubt someone will be given out bout mine in the future! And ill be in the bus lanes!!!:D
